Was out chasing bulls with my pops over the weekend around the divide 16c/21a and didn't hear a thing! Got in on a few small herds with some young 3x4 4x4 type bulls and not a sound. What have y?all been hearing?

Was in 16B saw and heard a few bugle. Nothing aggressive. Smaller bulls sparring and still in bachelor groups. Then one day it was completely silent.

Up in 53 I Heard a Pickup door close then BAM a perfect Bugle with a chuckle at the end.... then some laughing and beer cans hitting the road. Think that Bull was just teasing them.
Jack

Heard some noise in the early morning and saw some beards but they were not coming in. After that nothing for the rest of the day . Unit 34 here

LAST EDITED ON Sep-03-19 AT 09:15PM (MST)[p]No bugles--did hear some bulls chirping at each other. Brutally hot weather still.

It seems to be cooler then last year, and supposed to rain in certain areas across the state. Hopefully the cooler weather will kick them in. Spoke with a guy that has a tag in 51 and he said they're really starting to get fired up in the northern parts.

I completely disagree with the above post that its cooler than last year , I was hunting and it was 94+ everyday this year first time in 20 years of hunting id leave camp at 4 am in a short sleeve shirt . Was brutal hot and the elk activity reflected that in my area

So based on the data from accuweather.com and in the Winston nm area, from 9/5/2018-9/9/2018 the 5 day high averaged 87.2 degrees and low averaged 61.2 degrees, where in the same days in 2019 averaged 84.6 degrees on the high and 59.6 degrees on the high. Now I know it may not be the same for all areas of the state, but around my area it is a little bit cooler. With added rain in the upcoming weekend, should be even cooler next week. Either way they are bugling up north and not in the West- Southwest.

Brother has a unit 13 archery tag, put on 12 miles yesterday, saw 10 cows and one spike in velvet that came in to a cow call and barked at us

I hiked into the Pecos on Thursday. In the afternoon when I hit about 11,000 feet, I started running into elk and hearing bugles. I heard them and saw them Thursday evening and Friday morning, until I headed back down at about 1:30 Friday afternoon. Lots of elk, and tracks, but all up high.

Wife?s hunt was in 16D..... the bulls we hunted were fired up pretty good..... we were on screaming bulls every morning and afternoon. We took all 14 days off for the hunt and she tagged out in day 3. We waited a couple days to get the meat processed there in Aragon and the bulls were still talking good around camp as well. Even went up high to make some business calls and had some bulls firing off around noon. Awesome year to be in the woods.

Please say it isn't so!
Hurry up Oct and get here. Lol
Good luck to everyone out there throwing sharpened sticks at the beasts. Hope you all get to see the life giving crimson fluid sprayed all over the topography.

I was in the Valle Vidal on Friday and things were a little slow still, saw two nice bulls on the way in at 530pm, crossed the road near Cimarron CG. They both had 15-20 cows but neither one would talk back, but the cows were definitely responding. After dark on the way out I was able to get several bulls to respond with cow call. Hunted 53 yesterday for 2nd archery and didn't hear a thing until after 8am, had several bulls talking back and forth to each other and answering the cow call but still really light for mid September, this only last about 1/2hour. Headed back Thursday for last 5days of the hunt.

What's the latest on the bugling? Only 2 posts of bulls down on this site. Must still be slow.
On Facebook their has only been a few also.

LAST EDITED ON Sep-21-19 AT 07:44AM (MST)[p]Finally got back to NM yesterday to get after the bulls in 53. First few hours were hot and quiet! Felt like the first week of the hunt, but then around 9 the bulls started up! We had a few bulls starting bulging back n forth so we joined the choir and got down between three bulls. The father in law backed up about 100yds and started raking a tree and calling and the bulls started going nuts. I worked my way around a hill as two bulls were sounding off and I set up again. I was on a small trail when I caught movement and sure enough it was a small 5x coming straight towards me, he was moving so fast he that passed by me at 15yds before I could do anything! I thought damn I blew that opp, but then I heard glunking coming from where the 5x came from and I saw him, a nice 6x with big whale tails, he was headed up towards the father in law, so i screamed at him with a bugle and two cow calls and he turned and ran right down the trail i was on, fast fast! I knocked an arrow and was trying to find my opp to draw but no trees between us to obscure my movement. He got to about 10yds and laid his head back to bugle right in my face and I figured draw now or get run over lol, as I drew he saw me and jumped and turned to run, a bugle stopped him perfectly at 20yds and the bright red luminock was all that I could see sticking out right on the X where I had settled my pin! He went about 50yds as I bugled and I heard the crash!! BULL DOWN! Slow hunt turned hot as hell really fast! We had to get back into the deep thick to find these guys and it was 10 when I shot him and i walked out with a full backpack and his rack at 4pm. Headed back today with horses to get the rest! This ones dedicated to you BOWDEADLY, I know you haven't laid hands on a bull in the field in a while! Lol

Good job Pard, your grandkids are getting big and you're getting old! LOL
Can't wait, a few more weeks to finally go chase the beasts.
Got a friend that goes to CO every year and gets into elk but can't get it done. If I don't draw crap next year I'll let you know and you can meet us up there. It's an over the counter tag and since you will be a resident and won't have to pay $500 plus for the tag you can buy all the beer and Crown to celebrate my kill.

Waiting to hear back from this weekend hunters, hope the bugling is still going strong. We head out in a few days and I can't sit still. Camper is already hooked up to the truck. Lol

Still bugling as of this morning in the 6s as we packed out a 325" bull that my buddy hammered yesterday morning on the opening muzzleloader.

Bowdeadly, the cold snap is only gonna be a 24hr cold front then right back to the 70s! The elk are gonna wait to go full bore rut right after you leave! Lol good luck buddy and remember, bull elk aren't dangerous game and don't need a backup shot to ensure safety!! No watching the shot thru your scope in case she misses!!

Gonna let her shot it with Gramps 25-35 open sight at 40 yard. Oh she doesn't miss not sure where she learned that from cause I miss all the time. LOL

I'm Mozey's buddy (and I'll tell you it's good to be buddies with Mozey). I'd like to thank him for all his help with my hunt. Also, I can report for the hunters this weekend, as of yesterday, the bulls were still vocal! Good luck out there!
