Groups sue over feeding on Elk Refuge

Article completely failed to note that the higher number of elk on the refuge was a direct result of increased predation by Wolves off the refuge. We just visited the area and saw the herds.

Again wildlife management is up to the state and such it should be the state that has ultimate say.

jm77,
You have the right to question how these cases end up being filed in the DC District Court. The judges in the DC District Court encourage this kind of forum shopping. This case belongs in Wyoming Federal District Court and no where else.

>Crazy the tree huggers don't want
>the elk fed.

...but they damn sure want the wolves fed, on the elk!

Is it in Federal court because the elk that Wyoming feeds in the winter summer in bordering states?

No, I don't believe that is it. However, I am sure the eco-elites might argue that when the issue of venue and jurisdiction comes up. It is likely because many of the elk on the refuge are coming from the two National Parks in the area. When D.C. District Judge, Amy Berman Jackson, kept the Wyoming wolf case in D.C. she claimed that doing so was of "national interest". These eco-elite groups know where they have any chance of prevailing on the issues they raise. It is usually of greater importance to them, than the actual facts of the claims they raise.

+1...Probably just want to go to DC to get high!

I heard a DC firefighter just yesterday say people are smoking on every corner.

That article is a little short on detail. Jay is a friend of mine and I spend a few days up there with him every year.

the wolves came in about a month ago this year, granted not as many as usual but enough there are plenty of kills around. more have moved in since I was there last month he said.

Last year the elk weren't there, so neither were the wolves. go figure. but they about wiped out what moose were left in the drainage .

There are still plenty of wolves and right now is when they do the most damage. it's pathetic when the pregnant cows are getting heavier and slower and the snow is crusted hard. it's simply a bloodbath.

For what it's worth, there weren't many elk at Alkali but he did feed there . it was supposed to be closed this year but it wasn't.

Take the jurisdiction side out of it.

The question about a possible pool for mass CWD infection isn't hype. We know that CWD came out of high fence, high concentration, game farms. That disease has the potential to kill more than any wolf.

Another thought. It would be fun to see all the "horror" if there wasn't a refuge. Elk wandering into Jackson. Wolves following. All the rich libs having to deal with it.

The feeding is working. it's worked for years. it doesn't require feed grounds to spread CWD.

if someday CWD moves in and kills a bunch of elk that will be very unfortunate, but the alternative is certain death by starvation if the feeding stops.

On this ^^^ we agree.

In central Wyoming large elk herds concentrate on winter grounds and CWD has been there for decades. The positive test rate has never risen above 6% that I can recall. These herds remain over objective despite liberal hunting seasons.

jm77 hit the nail on the head. The main reason Game and fish feed the elk on feed lots is to keep the elk out of the farmers fields and hay stashes.

Soooo what decisions can the state of wyoming make anymore without another court or state deciding what is good and bad for us.. in the end anytime another court or state we see major failures and impacts..

Last time I looked the ownership and management of wildlife belongs to the state, except of course when a species is listed under the ESA. Elk are not on the list. These groups should be suing the G&F but they are using the courts and federal involvement to circumvent the law.

It's not the business of a DC court to force Wyoming to change lawful game management.
