WY Residents only bison raffle

Good news if you're a Wyoming resident. Good to see Governor Gordon follow up on his promises to bring a bit of equity into the Governors tags. Myself and a few others met with Governor Gordon in January and he said this was a priority.

One of the 5 Governors bison permits is going to be raffled for a resident only draw. I would like to see this expanded, hopefully a sheep tag next.

CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) ? Wyoming residents have a chance to land a bison hunting license for just $10.

Gov. Mark Gordon, with support from the Wyoming Wildlife Foundation, is raffling off a Governor?s Bison License, which will cost just $10 to the lucky winner.

All Wyoming residents who are eligible to hunt in Wyoming can enter the raffle. Tickets are limited to one per person, and the bison license is non-transferable. The lucky winning ticket will be drawn during Cheyenne Frontier Days.

Article continues below...
Gordon says in a statement that he wants to give any Wyoming citizen who enjoys hunting or who has ever considered hunting a chance to experience this time-honored Wyoming tradition.

Proceeds of all raffle sales will go back to supporting Wyoming?s wildlife and habitats.

To enter the raffle, or for more information, visit www.wyomingwildlifefoundation.org

I would like to see this with one Governor license from each category, but glad to see him do this.

Undoubtedly this will earn less money than a raffle opened up to any hunter, nationwide.

So I guess it isn't about raising money, or contributing to the resource. And I always thought the justification for conservation tags (governor's tags, etc.) was to raise money and further support the wildlife department with their conservation efforts.

At least there is no longer a charade about motivation...

If it goes to 4 out of 5 (which Wyoming could do), then I would agree with LlamaPacker in that it is probably not what is in the best interest of wildlife conservation.

One per person is great as well, but the question ultimately is which way raises more $?

I'll bet you dollars to donuts that the odds of winning this raffle are worse than the odds of drawing a resident bull bison tag? At least they better be worse otherwise it was a wasted opportunity to generate some real money for wildlife in Wyoming. If they aren't then this raffle will have only generated $21,000. Reg draw is cheaper to enter too. Only out $5 for that chance.

While I support the Governors thought behind doing this, I wonder if this is a wise use of this tag. Lets just say for sake of argument that the same number of people that put in for Bull/Cow/Calf tags in 2018 buy a raffle ticket. This will only generate $28,740. While nothing to walk away from, its also not a difference maker. If your going to have Gov tags then make them difference makers. If not then I say put that tag into the draw pool with the rest of them.

Personally, I wish the Gov tags just went away and the price of tags was determined by how much it costs to manage that species. Too many people want the opportunity to hunt everything, have a high quality hunt, hunt as much as possible but make sure its dirt cheap. Unfortunately for many species that equation doesn't add up.

End of rant, now off to buy my raffle ticket. Yes, I am a hypocrite.

Soooo, you're saying there's a chance?!? Lol

'Ike'

Bowhunter...

Thanks to Governor Gordon for this gesture.

It costs me more than $10 in gas to go to town to buy a $1 soda. (Yep, poor fuel economy in big pickups and a ways to town.)

I've shot a bison and am not real charged up about the hunt, but I'll sure buy a ticket for myself and my family to support the cause.

I wish it could be transferred to another Wyoming resident, because if I won, I would give it to a young hunter.

Last year, the first Governor's bison tag auctioned went for $14,100. I didn't see what the others went for. Maybe this isn't a bad idea after all.

Jeff,

I hope I am completely wrong. I hope that raffling this tag off to residents only generates a boat load of money. I hope the odds of winning this tag are 10x worse than the odds of drawing a resident bull tag. I hope that this raffle generates at least double what auctioning the tag off does. That would be a great thing and would serve the purpose of the Gov tags.

I wonder that they wont be and that the only outcome of this is that we residents will feel a little better about our Governor looking out for us. Which, as I understand it, is not the purpose of the Gov tags.

Its most likely that I am wrong. I've been wrong before and will again.
