Well I finally drew a unit 67 antelope tag and need some advice. Would you hunt the first week of the season or wait until Oct. when the crowds thin out. Is the SE portion still more productive than the SW. Lots of questions I know but have time to scout and want to make it count. Thanks for any feedback and PMs.

I would think the entire unit is pretty much the same. Find water and you will find antelope. Good precip year here so it may keep them spread out a bit more than on dry years, but the horn growth should be good.
With that unit being part of the One Shot Antelope hunt, I would shy away from the first two days for sure. After that it should calm down and you will be mostly by yourself.

Thanks. I have reviewed all of the previous posts over the times and seems like it is busy early. I can hunt pretty much the entire season and will get over there to scout roads and water. I was in that area a quite a few years back on a fire and thought it looked good. Looks like a good year for growth.

If you can be there the whole season then I would be there. If you want to shoot the biggest buck in the unit, then go early and find him and shoot him the first minute of the season. If you want a fun relaxing hunt then skip the opener and enjoy looking over all that is left. I'm sure you can find a good one later on. Just maybe not the biggest the unit has.

Hunted the unit four years ago and on opening morning I saw one other hunter. Huge unit, plenty of Antelope and try not to shoot the first one you see.

Thanks for the intel. Looking to go over to scout then be there a couple of days early to fine tune the previous locations. Should be fun and will enjoy looking over a lot of antelope. Not as many here in central Id. Thanks again for the replies.

Congratulations on a great tag ! I'd rank the SE part below the highway west of the old Uranium
Mine as 1 st choice, 2 nd the SW part below main highway. I camped right by a main road on east side & hunted back west . Don't forget about some large Walk In Areas on east side, very little pressure from hunters.
Take your time ! After 1 st 3 days, the whole area is fairly quiet. If you can locate a super good buck before season, get him before someone else does. First 3 days gets lots of pressure ! The unit is huge & there are lots of areas to check out. The Rim Road on South West side gives a great view of many draws as you head back west. Take time & go very slow along it & glass it hard down below, then you can drop down off Rim Road & do a stalk if you find a big buck !
Best of Luck & happy hunting !

I'd get there a week before season & scout/recon hard, then have a huge buck picked out -- if possible, if you have the time !! Tough call. They get spooked badly once season hits, but after 1 st 3 days they calm down fairly fast. I hunted there hard 2 full weeks. Huge areas to cover & recon.

Thanks guys. Good advice from people who know the unit. Will definitely look at the walk in areas as I like to cover as much area as possible. Lots of options which is nice.

South of the hwy held more goats,
And east had more than west. Killed an 80? just S of the Hwy and 76? in SE corner. My advice was given to me by a MM icon. Leave bullets in hotel room for three days til you really establish the units potential. Then kill the sucka.

I hunted 67 last year. There are antelope pretty much everywhere, but I'd agree that South of tha main paved road that biscects the unit (E to W) is the best area. I went in at the end of September and hardly saw anyone else. Unless you want to combat hunt, I'd delay and let things clear out. First antelope hunt for me and I came down from Alaska and just car camped in a large SUV (Expedition). You will see lots of antelope - they are everywhere. PM me if you want any tips. I'm a Huntin' Fool member and talked to a few guys that gave me some tips on where to go.

Thanks to all that have replied and given advice. Looks like the SE end will be the primary with the west side second. I am interested in the walk in areas and too see if they are overlooked and less crowded. Looking to head over next week and get the roads and landmarks down. Will get back to some after I get back. Thanks

hornguy,
I used to be of the opinion that scouting early and being on top of the antelope first light, opening day was the way to go. That is until my son and I decided to go the later in the season route. We hunted the last week of September when the bucks were rutting.

Now I wouldn't hunt them any other time. As was mentioned, it was way more enjoyable. Didn't have to worry about other hunters and I think some of the older reclusive bucks came out of hiding. We ended up chasing some dandies. Looked over hundreds of bucks and we had a blast. My son killed an 85" toad, and I missed one almost as big, for what that is worth. You won't draw again for a long time, so make it an adventure.

Thanks, sound advice. Hear what you are saying about making the hunt fun. I drew a early rifle az elk tag in unit 10 a few years ago and the pressure was on to produce. Man were there tons of non hunters out there for the first couple of days then it thinned out. Hope not to repeat it here. I do appreciate the good advice on this hunt. Mark

Well I was able to get over to the unit to scout. Big unit and areas to get off the beaten path. Drove the main roads of 136 to ore road to blm rd # 2104 on the south then up to 135 and back into Riverton. Also drove out to Moneta on the north end. Looks like there are quite a few goats w of the mine and off of 136. Will look there first then span out. Saw a couple of nice deer in the sage breaks which surprised me. Thanks again for all who helped.

Looking at a couple days early to find one and be ready opening morning but having less people around sounds really good to me. Guess I have only a couple weeks to decide.

My son and I made the trip out this weekend also. We saw quite a few in SW below the highway. Also did the loop you did. We saw plenty of antelope. Really didn't see much that excited us. We saw 2 that we would consider, but no monsters. Hoping those boys show up as the rut starts. We saw a nice 6X5 bull elk off of Rim Road with about a dozen cows.

How many points are you sitting on if you don’t mind me asking? I’ve got 8 and not sure what I want to do yet. This unit is at the top of my list though

I have 11 points and my buddy has 7. We average out at 9. Or l can apply with 11 for 67 and apply reg draw and he can apply for 75 with his 7 points. I’m after a trophy more than him
