Upcoming Season Proposal II

Here's some info I acquired from IDFG about resident and non-resident tags sales for the last 10 years.

I've been hunting Idaho since 1985 and have never seen the hills so crowded with hunters. I'm hoping IDFG does something to disperse hunters a little. I would like to see split seasons and hunters have to choose one or the other for example, Archery elk would be divided into 2 time frames 30 Aug-15 Sept and 16 Sept-30 Sept. Hunters would have to choose 1 or the other. They could do the same for all general deer and elk seasons where crowding is obvious. My 2 cents. Enjoy the info.

PS. If you are a resident, save some money and buy and 2nd tag.

16,636 elk tags 19,122 deer tags = total increase of tag sales in 10 years

Good info and thanks for sharing. Interesting that just as many non res as residents buy the second deer tag.

Also just too bad to see how many more deer tags were sold in 2017/2018, after the bad 2016/2017 winter that wiped out many deer. Gonna make the recovery take a long time, if they do recover.

Great Info! Reflects exactly what I'm seeing in the field. Out of state hunters flocking to ID in groves the last few years.

We are looking at another mild winter in gem state. That will make 6 out of last 7 years. Yeah we had 80-90% fawn mortality in some areas 2016/17. Don't be surprised if antlerless tags go up and more mule deer tags are issued this year . F&G goes off surveys and fawn recruitment not public perception. Yeah they take public input but if you think we have less deer in 2019 than we did in 2013 your miss informed. Last year was pretty good. This year should be even better. Sorry guys if you didn't see deer or the numbers of deer last year where you Have in past, but it's not that bad out there! If your tired of seeing nonresident plates avoid units like 39, half the state and most of nonresidents hunt in a 50 mile radius of Atlanta

Interesting to see the actual numbers. The number of Nonresident tags offered hasn't had any significant shifts in years in Idaho.
The economy doing well is a big factor in the increase sale of resident and nonresident tags. I also think hunters are spending more days on each tag than they did 10 years ago which increases the perception of more hunters.
One thing that changed is a shift of more nonresidents hunting the archery elk season. This is also true of residents shifting more towards archery elk, instead of rifle elk. OTC archery elk is just more crowded than it was 20-30 years ago and it will continue to get more crowded unless tags are limited.

And you have evidence of this...how? Born and raised, ya.. 39 is crowded. I've been there, done that. But maybe you yourself should take a drive. I'm not going to rant and rave, I'm done. With that said it's bad, and it's bad in SE units, it's bad in the central units, and it bad up North. F&G knows its a problem from hunter surveys and input. Old bastards on the commission dont like change and they could care less what WE as Idaho Sports Men and Women give them as input, so more than likely nothing will change.

Interesting to see the numbers. My takeaway is the biggest increases are from resident hunters - which fits the increasing population and the cap on NR tags. The economy is good enough NR tag sales are back to selling out, but they are capped unlike Resident tags. For the 2nd tags, looks like about an even split between R/NR for Deer...but its the residents mostly that are picking up the 2nd/leftover elk tags.

If you look at the percentages, the non res percent increase is much bigger than res. In 10 years the deertags went from 14K to 20K, 42 percent increase. Resident went from 123k to 144k, which is only 17%.

This supports what jetsled said and what I have seen in central Idaho regarding plates, not just 39.

After losing that many fawns, it takes years for the numbers to recover. It's not perception. FG needs to cut doe tags if they want to continue providing good opportunity in the future as tag sales just keep increasing.

Would be good to charge extra to non res for second tags. As a resident a second tag costs me more $$. Should be consistent.

Yes, but that's 6k more NRs and 21k more Rs. From a crowding perspective its total numbers that matter.

Personally, I'd like to see the whole 2nd tag thing dropped for everyone. It seemed like a good way to bring in $$ when the economy was bad, but I dont see it as necessary now. Bring it back if nr demand drops.

Lot of info can u get just license sales res/nonresident 09-18? Lot of guys are hunting deer and elk same time, just curious how many hunters there are?

Funny how still 15% of hunters are harvesting 85% of the game. I don't see the severe die off and lots of other hunters(maybe specific areas). I hunted 16 days archery elk, 8 days archery mule deer, took my 11 y/o daughter 3 days on a general cow elk tag to harvest.... least amount of people I've seen in this area in 5 years. Usually areas change every couple of years, to the amount of people hunting an area. I will say I did not harvest much this year besides a Doe antelope. Just get out hunt hard, don't crowd anybody and have a great time! No reason too b$@ch on a forum, make your statement to the F&G, let them do what ?they? went to school for and get paid to do! Everyone have a great spring and enjoy the outdoors, have fun! Crappies are biting at CJ.

We did have severe die offs of not fawns, but mature does and bucks in 48, 49, 50, 36 and several other units in central Idaho. How do I know,I helped set up feed grounds and watched over months as the deer started dying. Unit 52 had 3 feet of dense snow covering the desert floor, if we could not get pellets to them, they died. I disagree with you, let them do their job that's what they went to school for. These animals belong to everyone of us and the last thing I will let happen is some book biologists that is looking at his big game computer model of how many animals we have in a unit tell us how great the hunting is. That is why they have season setting meetings starting this week in Idaho. Everyone should try to get to a local meeting to see how seasons are set, if we let the Idaho Game and fish have their way, it would be all about the money, really not so much about the animals. Write now Idaho game and fish has millions of dollars in law suits against them from farmers. Solution get rid of the animals, more tags which means more money
