Lion success

I got lucky enough after multiple weekend trips cutting tracks and running dog it finally all came together! We had four Dogs on the ground one being 8 months old and another young pup. The dogs killed it on this track. Even with bad snow conditions on the south slops and a very rocky mountain they still managed to get the lion in a tree. As we approached the tree we saw the lion was in about a eight foot tall tree and figured it was going to jump. Sure enough as soon as it heard us approach out it came and there the dogs went.only 300 yards back up he went only this time in a much bigger tree. When we got to the 2nd tree I took a few minutes looking for a good shooting lane and then we got the dogs tied back to take a shot. I drew my bow back and it was over before the lion hit the ground. I owe it to my uncle. I'm very lucky to have had the opportunity to run with him this year we had a blast!http://www.monstermuleys.info/photos/user_photos_2019/9056910881.jpeg

Who all has tried lion meat? Anyone have a recipe they recommend? Most people won't touch the stuff but I like to get my own opinion and at least try it.

Congratulations! I've never eaten lion. Can?t get past the mental part. I've only been told there pron to have trichinosis so be sure to bring to temp throughout.

Steve Rinella has a recipe for "Grilled Lion".
Good luck, what ever you do with it, please don't use "Caul Fat".

LAST EDITED ON Feb-12-19 AT 08:03AM (MST)[p]I've never tried lion before, a buddy of mine got one earlier this year, he said if you didn't know it you would think you are eating pork. Looking forward to getting out and hunting with him one of these days but having a job and young kids keeps me a little busy. He has sent some awesome pics and video from his lion hunting trips this winter

Great Job, you saved some struggling Mule Deer! I had a friend that killed one and ate it and he said it was good.

Great looking cat! Good work!

I've also heard that it is similar to pork and can be very good, but haven't had the chance to give lion hunting a go as of yet.

Thanks everyone! I'm still excited I was successful on this hunt. I've heard that it taste like pork as well and it's more a mind game knowing that it's a lion when your eating it that you have to overcome. I'll look into Steven Rinella's cooking recipes thanks for the info.

I too once tried it and it did indeed taste exactly like ham. It had been smoked.

Mitch Sanchotena, owner of Imperial Taxidermy in Caldwell, gave it to me. He might have the recipe. Also, is absolutely one of the best cat taxi's in the West. I've seen some really bad, crazy eyed mounts, so at least call if you are dialed in there.

Thanks for the info. I'll give him a ring.

Here in New Mexico, we eat lion regularly. It is very similar to pork. Try it in a green chile stew (chile verde) with Hatch green chile and potatoes.

Young Lion is great to eat. It's when you start killing the really big cats that have green belly, the meat is rank and Evan smells bad. It is kind of like pork. Just remember you can turn Evan bad meat into a taco
