2019 Elk Archery Lemhi Information

I just got out of the military and I currently live in Missouri and here for my job. I started going out west for various hunts. I really enjoy hunting new animals other than whitetail. I have been to Wyoming and Montana and OTC tags in Colorado. I came across Idaho and wanted to give it a chance this year for Elk Archery hunt. I have done quite a bit of aerial scouting on Onx Maps and google earth. I will be going in for 14 days solo DIY backpack hunt, yes 14 days solo DIY archery hunt. I have completed several of these with zero issues other than having to hump everything out on my own. Anyway, I was just trying to narrow down an area to start in either Unit 29 or 37A. If anyone could give me any sort of information that would be great. I am not looking for a monster bull, getting a respectable bull would be fine with me. I primarily hunt for meat and getting out of the house for some me time. Thank you for your time.

First off, thanks for your military service. I have two sons that also served for 6 years each.
If (and it would appear) you are new to this forum and you are asking for someone to send you into a prime Elk spot in unit 29 or 37A might be asking a bit much. If you have read some of the other threads on this site most are directed to do their own scouting and research. Those two units are prime rifle draw units with very limited rifle tags. The Lemhi "A" tag for archery is "over the counter" so acquiring the tag will be no problem providing they are not sold out already. Have you purchased your tag? It would also appear you are a non-resident since you live in Missouri and are in the area for work. On the "Idaho" forum there are a few that would "not give you the time of day" as a non-resident. I am not one of those, I welcome new comers to the state. My first advice would be to contact Dane Cook at the Salmon office of Fish and Game. He has quite a bit of knowledge on both units. I also have quite a bit of knowledge and many years in both units that I would be glad to give you a starting place for some late summer scouting. With 14 days to devote you should be able to fill a tag. Both 29 and 37A are very rugged and steep (where the elk hide) and getting to them is work. My oldest son will be archery elk hunting in 37A this fall so I don't want to have you two tripping over each other.
Let me know if you were able to get the "Lemhi A" tag and we can talk more.

Yes, I have a tag for elk. Also, thank you for the reply. I am not looking for peoples hot spot just trying to gain information.

Yes, I picked it up in early Dec. the day we could purchase.

Started watching a herd of over 40 Elk yesterday in 29. All the big bulls (4) have dropped their antlers. One spike still had ivory daggers. An interesting observation to the north of the herd only 50 yards were 4 Big Horn sheep (one was a full curl ram) hanging out all day. They seemed to appreciate the company and maybe security in numbers. In the morning the coyotes were howling and at night the hoot owls searching for voles in the moonlight. If this isn't god's country I don't know what is!
