Super Tag Goat Units Info

Alright, now that I have drawn the tag - time for some intel research. I have my hotspots in mind (39, 46, 54) as I have hunted these before for other species as well as having access to some private properties in these units. I actually went out and looked around 46 some more yesterday and found some younger bucks - just had to get out and remember what Antelope look like...lol

However, there are two units that have me intrigued that I don't know a lot about. The first would be 42 - the southern border area from say riddle to the reservation along the Nevada border? My gut tells me there as to be some monsters roaming out in all that desolate country?

Second would be up north in 37/51 area - Mackey, Howe, Pahsimeroy Valley area. I always see goats out when driving up that way to Salmon and the Fish and Game record books show quite a few entries from those counties. Any help or suggestions for either of these areas?

I used to live in southern idaho. The 2 biggest goats I ever saw was one in 54 on the NV border above magic hot springs away from anyone and rds. The other was the southern part of 52A on the edge of some AG fields north of the Idaho youth Ranch. Good luck.

Do you have season dates different from the regular seasons? I'm not familiar with the super tag rules - never had to worry about it.

LAST EDITED ON Jun-17-19 AT 09:38AM (MST)[p]I can hunt any open unit during those regular seasons - so since I am rifle hunting basically can start hunting the Mid September openers...

I am trying make a "hitlist" of 5-6 bucks ahead of time and then decide on the bests ones to chase come the opener.

I am going to head up Mackay way in Mid July to do some scouting - the rest of my time will be spent trying to find some big bucks down here in the southern Idaho desert country. My goal is an 80" buck and I am willing to put in the time scouting and hunting to find one.

I have access to some pretty good private land in 39 that holds some good goats, that is my big plus in that unit.

I have archery hunted antelope as well as tagged around on elk hunts in 46 - have a good idea what that offers.

54 I haven't actually hunted - but considering everyone I talk to recommends it - there has to be some good ones down there...

I still am really intrigued about hunting up north around Challis, Mackay, Howe - hunting antelope in the timber.

Don?t forget that there is an antelope population in the very SE corner of Idaho in unit 76. Could be some good ones there as well.

SH's are a blessing and a curse. Seems to really heighten the expectation. Did a quick search and F&G only lists 45 goats in history over 80" in ID, only 12 since 00'. No obvious county as leader.

One thing is that Antelope are obvious, active all day, and easy to find in optics, that everyone now has. So, if you find a good one in a unit like 39, expect competition to have eyes on them opening AM. So I'd recommend focusing on either very restricted, very large private holdings if you have access, or on very remote herds. Otherwise, have plans A, B, C, etc.

These guys sure are fun to hunt. The one critter that really warrants me putting the knee pads in my Sitka pants.

I didn't see you mention anything about control hunts but those are included as well:

"Super Hunt winners can participate in any open hunt in the state for deer, elk, pronghorn or moose, including general hunts and controlled hunts, in addition to any general season or controlled hunt tags they also hold. All other rules of individual hunts apply."

Don?t mean to rain on your parade but your 80? goal of a supertag speedgoat may be a pipe dream. Since 2000, only 12 bucks have met that criteria in the state. We just don't grow big bucks. I honestly believe a 1 point draw tag for pronghorn in Wyoming has more potential then your supertag. Forget the number and go look for a goat that excites you!

Only 12 bucks have been entered... that is the key. I shot a buck in Idaho back in 2013, had him officially scored at 83 2/8? net, but didn't enter him. They are around but definitely tough to come by here.
