Greetings,

Long time lurker, first time poster. I've been very fortunate to draw a Unit 40 late rifle rut tag as a non-resident. I'm not going to ask anyone to share any trade secrets on location as i'm happy to do my own legwork, but I'm hoping someone would be willing to share some thoughts on Rut timing for this unit.

The season is 24 days long, and realistically I'm only going to go have about 8-10 days to hunt (family, work, etc). I live 1600 miles away so I need to try to make my days count. Please share any thoughts you have about picking early (1-8), Middle (9-16), or late dates (17-24) for this unit. Any general thoughts or DMs would be very helpful.

Thank you,

DevilDawg

I'd probably pick your middle dates out of the three you provided. You will see rut activity during any of the season dates though.

Earlier the better. I listened to a biologist and went late and missed the main rut. Local cattlemen's told me the rut early and that's why they moved the hunt up.

Just what I seen and head. I thought the latter the better, but found out the year I went the hunt at first was a blast.

Like stated above. The rut is usually early in 40. I would say the 5-7th is typically the heaviest rut activity but you will see it through out November.

40 has gone down hill but you will see lots of bucks and the occasional monster. Just depends on how hard you work for it and how lucky you get. Regardless you will have a blast and that's all that matters.

Drew it a few years ago. Hunted early for a week and late for a week. Saw a lot of deer but no big deer. Talked to fish and game and heard of a few larger ones taken out. All 3 of us ended up getting one but it was like two 3 points and a 4 point. Saw two monster bulls, but wasn't looking for elk.

If you have 10 days go 5-15th. Be careful in that unit with weather as the roads can be impassible.

Big bucks can be found but I'd be careful passing even 170 class depending on your appetite for tag soup.

Yes that Owyhee mud can be a read pain in the back side if its wet. I drew the tag in 2016 and passed on a lot of nice bucks. I took 2 weeks off and never did see the bucks rutting...seen a couple bucks sparing one day. I had a ton of fun and hope to do it again before I die. Good luck
