Hey all,
Hoping I can get some help with Central Oregon. I've been in Bend for about 5 years now, but life has been busy. Hunting has been on my list for quite some time. Last few years I have put in for rifle tags but came up blank, then I missed the draw date earlier this year. So I did what any rational man would do: I bought a bow.

I'm an obsessive guy. I've been soaking up info as fast as I can, but its like drinking from a fire hydrant. There is just so much info! I've read a few books, listened to podcasts and so on, but I have a bit of trouble putting the data to use! I feel like the terrain here just has so much to offer, high altitude timber, lower altitude timber and high desert all with tons of access to food water shelter. I mean I'm suffering form information overload here. Plus I know a lot of our animals migrate out east for the winter. So many variables I just don't know if what I am doing is highest / best use.

So far I've been out off the CLH walking game trails. I've run into a few small groups of Muley does and a few head of cow.

Would love any help getting pointed in the right direction!

Muddler,

Looks like your new to the site and sometimes folks are not real helpful when someone asking for help on their very first post believe me I learned that with my first post. I was born and raised in Redmond and hope to move back someday. The good news his you're in a great place to live, the bad news is with the population boom over the last 20 years hunting around there is poor now days. Anywhere East like around the 3 creeks lake or Suttle lake area's and area's surround lapine will do. Put out trail cams and boot leather and keep your expectation low. For better elk head east anywhere in the Blues are Wallowas and for deer it's tough but trail camera's and blinds do work for those that have the patients and you can hunt close to home.
Good luck hopefully I'll be back home someday myself.

Thanks Callsalot,

Thanks for the info.

I completely understand the asking for help as a newbie angle. However I'm not asking for (nor do I want) specific spots. I plan on going out East next season for Elk. I've done my research have my areas and game plan set for Elk.

I plan do get involved with trail cameras next season as I am a bit late to that party this year.

I have done research on mule deer. Game plan was to try and find where they "should" be by eliminating areas without food, water, shelter. Problem is the whole unit is food, water, shelter. I tried sticking to north facing timber with south facing clearings. Thought I might be on the right track until I saw 2 forks and a 4x4 driving home on the 97. Makes me think that some of the info I've researched just isn't applicable to this area.
