I have some inlaws in the area. What is elk hunting like? PM me if you want. I have a bunch of elk pts to get rid of. Thanks!

Hunted the West Beulah on public land last year second season and I mean I hunted. Spent 6 full days in a roadless chunk I have killed many a bull in. Saw a grand total of two elk. Both bulls. Just couldn't get them to hold still long enough. I think the population is way under management objective. There are still a few elk left but not like a decade or two ago. Maybe some of the private land is better ?

West isn't much of a hunt. the east can be really good, but there's a lot of private land issues there.

The high desert part of that unit (southern part) can be feast or famine. Plenty of elk in the Beulah Unit but they can be in very different places from year to year (even from week to week!). That high desert country provides marginal to average elk habitat but poor cover so the elk can move around a lot or will sometimes leave an area at the first sign of pressure. There is so much country that they can just move to a new place.
The timbered area between/around Prairie City and Unity can have more predictable elk and elk that will circle back around a day or two after they get pushed out of an area. That area is similar to what people traditionally think of when they think of elk country.
Your hunting plan will need adapt to the part of the unit you are hunting.
I grew up outside of Prairie City so let me know if you have specific questions and I'll help if I can.

Spot on! x2

The problem with the west is the elk numbers suck. it's nothing like it was even 10-15 years ago.

The east doesn't have a lot of elk either but they're easier to find. if you have access to the private they're on.

Beulah has promise right place right time haha. It's our my back door, private land has a lot of the holding down low.
