LAST EDITED ON Nov-19-18 AT 01:45PM (MST)[p]Anyone know how the rut is going around Kern River? I'm guessing the smaller deer came down already but I won't get back up there until the day before the hunt.

They could get a little snow later in the week.

Also would be nice to know the status of the road closures. I've heard in the past they are in a hurry to close it down.

Call the western divide ranger district and ask about closures. I drew the tag a few years ago and they closed the lower peppermint road before the season and opened it back during the season. They're supposed to be getting snow this weekend and they don't plow any of the forest service roads so it'll be tough to get back to the forks of the kern or even to cherry hill on the Sherman pass road

Thanks BigJav. What did you end up killing on the hunt? Any other info you can provide is appreciated. PM if you prefer

I've drawn the tag twice in 99 and 06 the two hunts were really different.. do you know the keen vary well ? ... the unit got snow up high so the only real roads your gonna need is the Mt high way from Kernville to Johnsondale. .. the migration basically follows the highway.. I hunt D8 every year so if you wish to pm me I'll give you my maps and what ever you need

Saw one come off the mountain in a pickup not sure of the size in back of pickup. Saw 3 x 3 bucks chasing doe Nov 29. Did not see bucks chasing doe after that. Largest I saw was a 3 x 3 and I only take 4 x 4 or larger here. Back home more later and a pic or two.

My impression was that G6 was not that great of hunt this year. Hope not true but no posts here to the contrary? G6 Buck chasing doe? Maybe the fork buck that was in the area actually not doe!

Since nothing to show this year my first buck in D8 50 years ago.

Outstanding! That vintage buck needs a cape on it. Super. Love the splits on the mainbeams. Thanks. Post more if you have available.

Snowed pretty good the first part of the season so I'd imagine they were able to get some decent deer out of there

Saw chart of deer (all types I guess) population in California since 1911. Seems population trends down 75 percent since I was in high school but interesting enough higher than 1911 before herds managed is my guess. Visited a spot in the G6 / D8 area I visited as a teen in January of this year and no deer sightings. Fifty years ago in January sighted 8 bucks 3 point or better and fifty deer total and basically the same spot and same time of year. Anyone have a good look at the G6 winter herd this winter?

I am on my fourth season in D8, and did not see any bucks again. Only does and bears. I got a D8 and G38 tag this years, but hunted D8 last three years. I've been to the fork of the kerns, Jerry meadows, osa meadows, mogahany campground area, Bartolas Mountain, and Mather Meadows. Mather and Jerky is where I found the most printing. What or where now? Please help

This is my fourth season at D8 with no luck. I've Hunted Jerky Meadows, Fork of the Kern, Osa Meadows, Manzanita Knob, Mohagany Creek area, Mather Meadows, and Bartolas Country and have yet to see a buck. Lots of does, beers, and prints. I saw the most in Mather and Jerky. This years I also have a G38 tag, but really want pull one out of D8. How high elementos do you find them?

You're jumping around to too many areas. Pick a spot and an area and stick to hunting that particular area. Pick it apart and become familiar with feeding areas, water and travel routes. The time will come that you start seeing sign and bucks. D8 is tough.
