I'm just curious, where in California are the biggest mule deer? Not looking for a hunting unit necessarily just where do they live? Are there some big nasty giants in Southern Cali in the deserts? If you could hunt one anywhere I. The state, where would it be?

D12 has some monsters.....but...

they are few and far between....

LAST EDITED ON Mar-14-19 AT 07:34PM (MST)[p]Well if you look at draw odds people really like to hunt X5b, X5a, X2, M3, M9, A14, A27, G3, G6, G37, G38 and G39; and I have seen some really big deer come out of those units, so if you have maximum points and put in for one of those tags go ahead. But honestly, there are trophy mule deer in X-Zone across the state, and some zones are way more overlooked than the rest, just because one huge deer was killed out a certain unit like two years ago. I have heard of people having really good hunts in X5b and also really bad hunts in X5b. But its the same way for zones that are more overlooked like X1, X4, X3b and X3a. Now in no way are these hunts a "cake walk", I live in X4 and that is where I have seen the biggest mule deer I have ever seen on the hoof in California. But if you draw one of those tags and expect to have an enjoyable hunt, you're going to get really discouraged. But if you can put in the time and scout, and find where the deer are, you can kill a trophy mule deer in any X-Zone in the state. My definition of a trophy deer is anything bigger than 160" or over like 28" wide. If I had the option to hunt any unit in the state I would probably go over to X3b or X3a and hunt those high desert mountains back there, I think that there is some big bucks over there, by seeing the deer that were killed back in the day around Alturas when the deer would migrate off those mountains. The genetics of those monsters are still there.

Biggest CA buck I ever measured was from D-12 (over 200")......I've seen some giants there as well when I lived in Blythe. But VERY hard to hunt and very few deer per acre.

BOHNTR )))---------->

I too live in X4 and have seen some great bucks in X3a, X4, X1 and believe it or not C zone..Biggest I ever laid eyes on was near Tennant in X1..easily well over 30" wide and heavy and tall..I didn't get the opportunity to count points but damnmmm...what a buck! That was years ago and with that said, I think those deer are long gone and everybody should go ahead and focus on D12 and G3..no more good ones left in the X zones.

This is a buck I was looking for last season I could not find him scouting, this pic was taken feb of 2018 I'm sure he would be the state record typical and make B&C around 200" you don't find many like this around cali.
That being said if I could hunt any where in the state I'd take that g-37 anderson flat tag and pray for deep snow up high.

California isn't necessarily known for producing big bucks, but the habitat is definitely capable of doing so. My guess would be the eastern sierras along the Nevada border

>hey 6x7, im about 90 percent
>sure I saw a fella
>with that big 4x4s shed
>antler, at least one. wasn't
>you was it?

Was not me

Sagebb, was that the picture from that buck that was in the southern part of Modoc Co?

YBO, cant say for sure not much info on the pic but one helluva horn! i'd be willin to bet a paycheck its the same buck

You won't find the pic he yanked it withen a hour of finding out other people knew where that buck lived, his pics gave away the exact location of where he found the horn also.Rule number one of picture taking is never post a photo online with back ground of hunting photos.

I guess the real question is how many points u got?, I just burned 13 on x2 I would not suggest that, most of the big dude are still in Oregon at that time, but I feel the best hunt is m9 which is the muzzle loader hunt...but unless you have the Midas touch or 15 bp's or better don't bother ....

Ive been hearing for years the migration from Oregon into x2 is virtually doesn't happen anymore?
I had a x2 Hunter friend that drew the Oregon tag over the border last year thinking the logic of it being better then x2 and he said it was one of the worst hunts he's ever been on for seeing deer,it's also a fairly easy tag to draw.

not sure i get ur point but i have scouted and guided in the area, for 20 years, both my sons have had the m9 tag i could only wish been applying since 89 anyways, i have seen the deer come in from oregon with a good storm, once i saw a single file group of deer bout 60 deer with bucks spread through out the herd...

I hunted X3b 2 years ago and ran into a group of guys in Alturus who were hunting X2 after a big storm, they said they hadn't even really started to see deer until the storm hit and they said the deer moved down from orgeon. I've never hunted that area but that's what these guys said and 4 out of the 6 guys had killed bucks all the bucks were over 26? wide we're just huge deer. The 2 that hadn't tagged out had said they both had passed over several big bucks but we're holding out for something over 30? . These guys had pictures to prove it so I have no reason to not believe them. But I specifically remember them saying the deer moved down from Oregon.

I had the rifle elk tag in 2017 and was scouting since july, and spent 3 weeks in x2 in september, and you definitely wouldn't need to wait for storms or for 190 class bucks to come from oregon. With cameras and seeing deer I had to have seen nearly a 100 bucks and at least 3 or 4 in the 180 to 190 plus range.I had one my wife spotted before september that was a large 4x4 in fuul velvet, that we sat and watched for half an hour at 25 yard next to the hwy.I have max pts and it will be m9 or nothing.nearly all the governor and raffle tag for that year were going to hunt devils garden, according to a guide that I talked to.
