Blacktails region A or B

If I just want to shoot an adult blacktail buck, would region A work, or will I be frustrated by the private land and crowding? My other option would be Region B, but it is unclear to me if I have to apply in this draw in June or if I can pick up a leftover.
I've only been in these areas once, but it seemed like a nice place to try something new.
Thanks in advance!

Let's start with you're probably going to be frustrated with both zones if u think you can just go kill a adult buck on public land. Both zones are way over crowded and those bucks have spent their whole life dodging groups of people banging pots and pans and shooting ARs at anything that moves during deer season. There are many great areas to get away from all of it if you're willing to put the boots on the ground, good luck. What area are u looking at it's a big state

LAST EDITED ON Mar-28-19 AT 07:09AM (MST)[p]I saw some wilderness and national forest in northern A. B would probably find me off the coast. Fitness is not an issue. I would give it a week of full effort. Just need to know how to get tags. I found burns and deer a few weeks ago in napa and sonoma counties on public land, but being in those areas with all the houses makes me a little nervous.

there is like 65000 tags for A and you can buy 2 all season long.there is a lot of private, but with more than a million acres of forest, blm, logging, and military land you wont be getting around much of it any time soon, plan on worm weather. that is the only deer I know of that will be feeding out in the open in the middle of the day at 100 degrees,I kill most of my deer at mid day when there is no pressure.General tag starts early july archery just in case you feel like hunting deer for 9 weeks rifle/archery.

There is a few spots Napa county right out of Calistoga to hunt and I've seen a few good ones pulled out of there but if you're traveling that far I wouldn't count out cache Creek WA we've killed some real good bucks in there if u can find a spot to yourself and backpack in but it's damn hot!

Like Wildfin said you can buy A tags over the counter without worrying about them selling out. If you want to get a B tag they are restricted tags and if you don't apply for one in the June drawing you have to wait until after the drawing to buy one over the counter assuming they aren't sold out. Last year you could buy one starting August 2nd but they sold out around August 17th so you have to be on the stick if you go that route and hope they are available.

Personally based on your comments I think you would be happier with a B tag. Lots of wilderness areas to hike into and better trophy potential IMO. If you know you are going to hunt for sure and want to hunt one of the B zones I would apply in the draw and list B as my second choice. That way you are assured of a B tag and won't burn any preference points (if you have any) and will gain a point if you don't draw your first choice. I am not sure if you are a resident or NR or have any preference points or not but from your comments I am assuming a NR without points. Just apply for a premium hunt on your first choice that you would be happy with if you were to get lucky in the random draw that works with your hunting schedule and weapon choice. Just be aware that most of the premium hunts are for mulies. Just doing a quick look of last year?s hunts it looks like you could apply for the premium archery hunt A30 and the muzzleloader hunt M11 if you only are interested in killing a pure blacktail as per the B&C boundaries. Alternatively you could list ?PD? (i.e. point deer) as your 1st choice If you don't care about the possibilty of drawing a lottery type tag with your first choice then you will get a preference point and a B tag. If you were to list a premium hunt as your 1st choice and get lucky and actually draw it then you could use a second deer tag app to pick up a B tag if any were available after August 2nd or pick up an A tag at your leisure...

LAST EDITED ON Mar-31-19 AT 10:42AM (MST)[p]I've hunted both. My opinion is that B zone is much better. Archery in B is really good, and rifle is really crowded, but there are lots of places to hunt all the way up to Oregon.
I also agree with an earlier post, why not get both tags?

Look at the Blacktail section more info in there. I have several posts all from B zone. too much private in A and too hot for me even though its a closer drive.B zone can be very good especially if fitness is not a problem like you said just get back in some where away from people lots of wilderness in B. Have hunted it for years so do not be surprised if you hunt a week and do not find a mature buck they are few and far between and are very smart. I would go in with the mind set of trying to learn something it may take some time before you even see a mature deer.
