Second season hunting

I need some guidance on where to hunt in CA.
I was eager to get a hunting license and experience the challenge of the hunt but it seems the challenge is finding a spot to hunt any advice would help. Also I would not mind tagging along with experienced hunters just to serve as a pack mule and learn the ropes.

Where are you located? Public land is all around us. There are many many challenges in hunting, where to is a small part.

I am located in the central area of zone A
(Monterey) I found a few spots (BLM Land) but I want to find other options and maybe out of zone B or D.
Can you hunt national Forrest??

Yes. Absolutely hunt National forest. I would suggest sticking to an area / zone close to home, learn it and hunt the crap out of it. The closer to home the easier to take time to go there. ?Other options? can wait until you get more experience. It's easy to think the grass is greener elsewhere but that's not always the case. The main thing is pay attention to the ground when your out. If you aren't seeing any sign of what you are pursuing try a different ridge or drainage.

Also get a bear tag. They taste good.

I will look into lost Padres national forest it is and hour drive from where I live. And I will see if there are bear out there. I hunted cottonwood rec area out on 152 by Pacheco pass and only saw one young forked buck and a lot of people so I'd like to avoid that area.
Thank you for your info. I did not have a clear understanding on national forests hunting but now that gives me some kind of direction.

I actually was able to fire off three shots it was my first time hunting got excited and missed at 150-200 yards.
Looks like I am limited to hunting at BLM land where no camping is allowed so I will be hunting the Same spot as last year. Maybe that buck is a little more mature and I have a second chance at it if it is still there that is.
Nevertheless it was a great experience and hit me hooked.

Oh ok. Took a chance at him, Good deal. Why are you limited to blm? What happened to los Padres NF? A quick google search of the forest says there's wild pig there along with deer and bear. Get a pig tag and hunt it now and scout for deer.

I did some digging and see a lot of camping ground and nothing that says no hunting and nothing that allows it I will call today and try to find more information. That is a good idea. I have never even thought about hunting for bear but that sounds interesting. Where do you hunt?

You had mentioned bear in an earlier post that's what I was referring to. Hunting for pigs is also something I would like to do and scout for deer while I am at it.
I found that website too and I called that number this morning the lady was very helpful. The los padres NF is can be hunted on however the soberanes fire burned most of the northern region and some roads are now covered and it is inaccessible I however the southern region is accessible and it is possible to hike north. I need to do some more digging to see how far south the fire burned.
From what I hear hunting in California is not good unless you are up north and I know people that live there who have never been able to hunt there.

Yes the deer hunting in CA in general leaves something to be desired. That's one reason to diversify the tags in your pocket. Deer, bear, pig gives you some more options for potential success / adventure and avoiding store meat. Looks like you are heading in the right direction. If you need more info on something just ask and stick around on the forum. Let us know how things go for you this season. If you get something we like to see pictures.

Hunt along the perimeter of the Soberanes burn. That fire was in 2016 making it prime feeding grounds now. Most of the roads should be back open.

I am not familiar with the area I will have to look for the perimeter of that fire and how far south it goes. Do you what the best roads to get there are from highway 1 or 101?
