Currently holding 5 resident deer points and interested in burning them on a X zone archery hunt in August. I have never went for monster muleys in CA before but have killed numerous bucks with my bow in A zone and B. I would like to backpack hunt and glass above timber line if possible.
Looking at X5-7 units. Has anyone experienced these units in August and can comment? Nevada results tomorrow and if I don't draw, might plan on burning my points this year.

If you want a above timber line hunt you need to go a ways below Lake Tahoe to find that.

Agreed.
X5?s are high desert.

X6?s are mountains where it is difficult to get over 3 miles from a road.

X zones east and south of Yosemite are what you're looking for. Never hunted em but I think they are X-8, X-9.

You would not need pts for a18 archery and you could hunt over 14000 for miles and miles and never see another hunter, you could hunt deer that have never been seen in some of the best genetics of the state.
