I am a rookie hunter that was lucky enough to draw a cow elk tag in the ELK SHARE program. The tag is for a hunt on private property in Smith River, Del Norte County from 9/28 to 10/04. I was hoping to find somebody with experience that would want to share the experience with me. I would also be hunting with a compound bow. I currently reside in south San Jose, CA. If you are interested, please let me know.

Those hunts are with rifle but you choose to use a bow ? If so being a rookie I would use a rifle and put the animal on the ground, just to many things could go wrong and it would sour the ranch owner off .

I appreciate and understand your input. The letter I received from the land owners and department of wildlife said that not all areas is safe for rifle and that archery/ muzzleLoader would be recommended to bring.

Also I have been practicing archery for 2 years now so I know my limitations. I pretty much got into archery with the intentions to bow hunt.

If the shot isn't there, I won't take it. Definitely don't want to wound an animal and let it suffer. I rather eat the tag than to take a bad shot.

Not bad if you use a little barbecue sauce ?

Drew a Share Del Norte bull tag a couple years ago. Some of the areas were pretty close to the highway and or other ranches. I'd go with what the others said and use a rifle.

"recommended" but not required? Bring your bow, but also throw in your rifle just in case. You might get an ideal shot at some point. Best of luck to you.

Yes I will definitely be bringing both rifle and bow. At the end of the day, the objective will remain the same; to fill the freezer!
