Hey Y'All,

I have just been stationed on Nellis, we moved here from South Carolina.

I would love to get out and do some coyote hunting to keep me busy until next fall. Any tips on good spots where I can go within an hour or two from base?

Also, I spent the entire day yesterday using satellite imagery to scout guzzler locations, I found a lot of them in the Desert National Wildlife Refuge. I know folks hunt Desert Ram there in-season, any idea if I could go out there and shoot some dawgs this weekend?

I appreciate your insight!

hunt the base.....you're already in

I appreciate that, and that's what I've heard.

I'm not so much concerned about getting on some 'yotes, they seem to be very abundant out here and I've had some success back east in calling them in from a ways away. I'm more concerned about finding areas where I am allowed to hunt. I've studied some maps and I'm guessing any land owned by the Bureau of Land Management is open to the public for hunting, but I am new to this state and don't want to step on any toes.

Some other areas I've scouted are:
- Muddy Mountain Wilderness (East of base)
- Arrow Canyon Wilderness (North-northeast of Base)
- Toiyabe National Forest (West of Base)
- Spring Mountains/Rainbow Mountain Wilderness (West-Southwest of Base)
-North McCullough Wilderness (South of Base)

If any of those locations are off-limits to hunting coyotes I'd appreciate the heads-up!

Thanks Y'All!

The only places off limits to hunting on BLM in southern Nevada are going to be Sloan canyon and red Rock canyon NCA's. Other than that just finding quite places without recreational folks will be key. You can hunt there but there are specific restrictions.

I also think you have to hunt 1/4 mile from any major trail on Forest service land, so most of the my Charleston area around Kyle and Lee canyons would be tough as they have tons of folks recreating and lots of trails. Don't quote me on the second part.

If I were based in nellis I would head up and check the bitter springs byway area. You'll also likely see some sheep. I don't hunt coyotes, but know the area.
If you haven't bit the bullet and bought the onx maps app, it's bad ass for finding out who owns what, and you can download maps and use the phone with no service.

I appreciate the info, and I actually did get the onx app about a week ago. I've used it to locate a ton of guzzlers in the area, including about a half dozen around the Bitter Springs area.

I take it you're in the area, what game do you hunt throughout the year?

Cold Creek aint bad for Coyotes. Could get lucky and cut a cat track as well.

Try Cane Springs South of Alamo NV. Gold Butte, Bunkerville exit south of Mesquite, NV. Searchlight NV, Joshua Hwy(164) between Searchlight and Nipton or Christmas Tree Pass towards Laughlin. All pretty much 2 Hrs from Nellis

I have really not hunted yotes much but have seen them while bird hunting.

Check out Kane springs as stated before, you also can go out behind bunkerville in the gold butte area, if you have a caller make sure you use it. I have aslo whacked some yotes on the west side of the spring montains, down in the foothills. Make sure you buy a cat tag, you might come across one.

Awesome, I really appreciate you sharing those spots with me, Frosty! I can't wait to get out there.

Yeah, I've heard a lot of guys have been calling in bobcats during coyote hunts. I suppose it makes sense considering they are going after the same prey.

Thanks again!

Welcome to Nevada. Most of what you can get to you can use freely. And if it's off limits, it will be easy to tell. Either posted or ag lands. It is not like back east...

Thanks AH! Got out on my first Jackrabbit hunt this morning, only saw one but got to spend some time in some beautiful country.

The farther north you go the better hunting is. Imo... If you get up here, give me a shout...
