(10) NR Elk, Deer, Sheep Points

This question is for Nevada NR Elk:

Although there's always a chance to draw a NV bull elk tag with the bonus point structure, is (10) points "no-mans-land"?

Or....is every NR bull elk tag drawn a long shot?

Or....is (10) points getting close to a tag?

Thanks
Chris

I'd say with 10 B.P. you are in the game to draw a coveted n.r. NV elk tag.Weapons choice makes a difference though ? Checkout in Nv section NDOW 2018 STATS & decide... general draw opens soon,Good Luck ... Bruce & SilverGrand

sitting on 21 and have not drawn. Not trying for late hunts which would be easier draws, but no guarantees in nevada.

Statistically speaking if you are a NR, you are in "no mans land" for everything except deer in the early or mid seasons. It's not going to change, you will probably draw one of those tags in the next 20 years if you keep at it.

crcountry - I live in Nevada and odds still aren't great for residents. With that said, I think Nevada's draw system is fair (I'm not trying to start a debate on that issue as it's been talked about in nearly every state forum on MM) and with 10 points you aren't out of the running.

Here is my take on Nevada apps with 10 points. Trophy quality animals, including elk, can be found in every unit. Of course some units traditionally produce more trophy quality animals consistently, but those are the units with the most difficult odds. I recommend finding a unit with "better" odds that fits your style of hunting and apply for it. I think that it is more important to be on the mountain with a tag in hand sooner, than it is to wait sometimes decades for one of our better units. If you hunt hard and get away from a road, you have a decent chance at an opportunity at a great animal no matter the unit. For example, unit 072 is typically an easier to draw unit as compared to 111. Sure, people don't kill nearly as many 350"+ elk in 072 as they do in 111, but that caliber of bull is not out of the question in 072 and every year bulls of that caliber are killed in 072. Generally speaking you will worker harder for a 350" bull in 072 than you might in 111, but I think the extra work is way better than the extra wait.

I am always happy to help out, so if you have any more questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

Well said Shed. I happened to draw WY Unit 54-1 late, and I worked my butt off for 8 straight days. Same with NM unit 52. My pack and my legs can get me in deep for 4-5 days....and I typically find what I'm looking for when I get there. In unit 54-1 I was 4 miles from the truck when I harvested a 340", and thankfully found a guy with horses to go retrieve my quarters and hide the next day. I have no interest in waiting 20+ years for a NV elk tag, but even the mid-level units can make even the most patient NR point holders frustrated. I do like late hunts better than early since the cold weather makes game retrieval easier, and the bulls can be fairly predictable when they get into post rut bed and feed patterns in deep/nasty/steep country. I'll start putting in this year and see where it gets me.

Nothing wrong with a 340 bull!
However if you want the chance to hunt a really big one such as a 370 or better you will need to put in for the units that can produce them. It could be a long wait or you could get lucky and draw sooner than later.
That applies to the big game species as well.

I think statistically you are still on the outside looking in although everyone has a chance. Another 5 years and you will be a little better off.
