My Father in-law drew 101-109. He's able to hike and backpack hunt. But wanted to know the expectations for these units and which of the units we should hunt. Appreciate and help. Thanks fellas.

Which season did he draw. If its early then you'll need to go high to see the bucks. I've always hunted unit 102 and had good luck in the past but haven't been there in the past 5 years.

its the oct 1-16 season. i have zero experience in these units. anything in particular i should check out? any particular unit you recommend? it looks steep

LAST EDITED ON May-28-19 AT 01:01PM (MST)[p]The steepness of the area is not an exaggeration, nor is the poor genetics comment. With those two caveats out of the way, there are a lot of deer in the 101 and 102 part of the Rubies/East Humboldts. If you are patient and willing to hike, shouldn't be a problem to turn up a decent one, just don't expect the biggest deer of your life.

Get as high as you can, the deer stay high up until heavy snow drives them down

Mitchell creek in 103 holds quite a few deer, cherry springs in 103 has fewer deer but older age class bucks but my go to spot in 102 is the cottonwood access point 3-5 miles north of jiggs reservoir on the west side of the Ruby mountains. I've hunted 101-109 religiously since 1996 if you have questions pm
