Unit 17 archery

Had this unit for rifle last year. Was really scenic. Saw a bunch of antelope, saw a trophy elk being hauled out by NDOW, but no deer. Hoping to get up higher this year. I hunted the range west of the Arc Dome at about 9000.

I'd like to hear about any successes in that Unit.

I was out there twice for the archery hunt. Hunted northwest and southwest of the Arc Dome and managed to get within 25 yards of a huge-framed 4 point only to have the wind shift on me.

It's tough country as you know, but you've got the right idea. Get up high and be sure you're on the glass before the sun rises so you can catch the bucks eating breakfast. Once the sun hits them, they will bed down at their first spot and stay there for 30 minutes to an hour. After that, they will get up and move to their second bedding area where they will likely remain there for the rest of the day. If wind conditions and their location are ideal, this is where you start planning your stalk.

Good luck and feel free to PM me if you need more info.

Heading up this weekend for the week. Going to base out of Columbine and work that side unless NDOW has a different opinion. Didnt really have any scouting opportunities, so we are going to just hope for the best and get high and glass all day.

Anyone have any success in 17 yet?

I'm chopping at the bit half way around the world counting down the hours until I get home and get in 17 country. I'll be hunting all next week. Unfortunately, did not get an opportunity for a scout trip... so we'll see how it goes. Will certainly be fun even if I'm eating tag soup.

Columbine is a great spot to camp. It can get very busy so I hope you find a spot to park. There are streams all over so you should not have to worry about water. There is one right at camp and at least two other separate streams off the main trail.

Once you get up to 10,000ft, there will be many basins to choose from for your glassing and hunting pleasure. Good luck and be safe!

I certainly hope you harvest a good buck. But yes, regardless, it's all about being out there and enjoying God's creations.

Be safe!
