Area 7 Mule Deer advise

New to hunting and drew a Antlerless Mule Deer tag. Pretty excited, but I am overwhelmed with how big the area is. Been living in Nevada for 3 years and have never been to Elko. Can anyone help me with certain areas to focus on. Would like to know what areas are good. So I can buy some topographical maps of the area. Going to be doing some scouting this summer. As of now I am just winging it.

Get a map. Find your boundary, get off the pavement onto a dirt road, drive slow. Look out windows of vehicle. You will probably find a doe. Good luck.

As cjboz mentioned it won't be very hard to find a doe. There's lots of area to look, and a lot of it will hold deer.

If you can take some time to get out and scout the area, which can be as simple is just taking a camping trip to drive some of the roads, just to get familiar with them before the hunt.

Is the tag all of area 7? If so, I would recommend 071 around Tennesse Mountain, or 072 around the Jarbidge Wilderness. You shouldn't have to go into the wilderness to find a doe. You could probably find one driving the road between Charleston and Jarbide.

If you go out early and find the areas where you see them, they will likely be near the same when the hunt starts. They may be just a little further from the roads, but don't think you will have to go more than half mile off a road.

My biggest advice though, would be sure that you know to do with it once you get it down. Game meat can be really good, but it can be really bad, too if you don't take care of it. You don't have to be an expert or anything, just be careful to get it gutted and cooled as soon as possible.

Thank you for the information. The tag is for all of area 7. I will check out the places you mentioned. From what it sounds like I got an easy tag for my first hunt.

Deffinetly need to watch a bunch of youtube videos before the actual hunt.

I've been all over 7. Give me a call and I'll help you out

go buy a goat and kill it and butcher it in your backyard.......nothing like real practice.

Finding a doe will be pretty easy and I wouldn't venture deep to find a doe. Snake Mountains in 75, drive slowly along the roads and you'll see deer.
In addition to understanding how to butcher/breakdown a deer, my advice is to understand shot placement. Focus on the vitals, heart/lung area. This means, on a broadside animal, your target is the bottom 1/3 just behind the shoulder. Check google for a better picture. Most people wind up shooting a deer higher than they should, part of this is because rifles are typically sighted in 1.5-2" high at 100.
You'll have plenty of opportunity, so wait for an ideal shot that you are comfortable with taking.
