I could use a little elk help

I drew the unit 10 cow depredation and the unit 6 spike tags. I was hoping to have some time to go scouting before my new baby showed up. Babies have their own plans! He showed up five weeks early and threw a hitch in my scouting plans. Not at all complaining!! I am stoked to have a new guy to adventure with! I could definitely use a little help from someone that knows those areas and might be able to give me a jumping off point. I am going to try to get out for a little scouting closer to the season start but, I may end up going into the mountains with just my maps to guid me. Thanks in advance for any help!

My advice would be to skip the cow hunt and concentrate on the spike hunt.

Finding elk in the rubies and be extremely challenging, with a very low success rate.

If you decide to hunt the cow head to Little Green mountain in the north half of 102 or you could try Mitchell creek/ cherry springs in the far southern part of 103. Those are the places I've seen most evidence of elk. As far as the spike tag 6 got hammered by fire last year so I don't know what it's looking like now but if they didn't burn I'd hunt the bull run mountains

If your 6 spike is the late hunt then you'd be best to throw the tag in the trash and use the fuel money to start a college fund for the new baby. Early is not much better.

It is the late season tag. Any specific reason why it might be better to toss the tag? I appreciate all of the responses! This will be my first time chasing elk so, any info is great.

By the late season they are so pressured that they live in Oregon or cross the road to 61. Just look up the success rates and that should enlighten you. It's not impossible but its highly unlikely even if you know the unit well...

My .02, I'd probably turn the cow tag back unless you've got lots of time. The early hunt can be easier, however I've taken cows on both hunts. I would guess that with all the tags given out for these hunts, only 5-10 cows are harvested each year and most are on the early hunt. The spike tag is a different story, and with a reasonable effort, your odds of success are pretty good.

If you decide to keep the cow tag, I'll give you all the information I know.

Not sure if you have 108 in your unit but I would try there density is not high but for a easier hunt I would look there pm for more info.

108 is NOT a part of the depredation hunt.

The tag is only good for 101-103.

108 is part of 104 and 121 for the elk hunt.

Yeah 108 is definitely not on that hunt. I have from Aug. 1 to Jan. 5 to fill the depredation tag. At best, I fill my freezer. At worst, I spend some time camping in the Rubies taking my rifle for a walk. With five months to fill that tag, it seems like a good idea to at least try. The hunting pressure scenario in unit 6 makes a lot of sense to me. I have Nov. and Dec. to fill the spike. I might go out just to see some new country. And again, at worst, I camp and walk with my rifle. All of the comments have definitely given me some things to think about.

I must have misread or misunderstood your dates. Since your cow hunt starts August 1, I think with a little luck, you could kill a cow. I'll be happy to give you all the information I've got and places to go look.

That's a dam good way to look at it. When season gets closer hit me up, I'll let you know where to look for the elk in 6 late. But don't get any false hope. Luck aside, I think you're more likely to kill a later summer cow in 10 than you are a winter spike in big 6....

From the closed Harmon's resort, north on Marsh road, cross 2 cattle guards, next Creek on the left, 8000ft at 8am on the ridge line heading up to green mountain peak..11-15 cows and always 1 bull. Last year was a rag horn. 5 years straight same thing and no one I know ever draws the tag. Should be 102. Good luck if it's in your area.
