The DWR,SFW,MDF, and dedicated hunters, will be planting about 2,000 potted bitter brush plants, tomarrow Sat April 5th, starting at 8 AM. Please bring shovels and gloves, warm boots and clothing. Millville is approx 3 miles south of Logan. Questions call Greg at 435 757-6775, or Jodie Anderson DWR volunteer coordinator 801 791-8589 Thanks, Greg

Greg,

My back and shovels do not get along. I do thank you for your efforts though. Thanks for getting volunteers and coordinating the effort. I am glad to see MDF, DWR, and SFW teaming up to provide some feed.

I would do it if I lived closer. I spent two winters planting doug fir and pine trees. I averaged about 750 trees a day.

The best survival rate happens when you plant in the rain, so don't let that stop you! Snowing is good too, as long as the ground isn't frozen.

Good for you guys!

These photos were taken last summer and the plants are even bigger now with really well developed roots. These larger seedlings should have a lot better survival rates than the small tublings or bare-root stock that the DWR has used in the past. It takes more work, but the return on investment makes it worth it.

This is a really neat project that could make a significant difference in the winter range carrying capacity of the Cache unit. The owner of the greenhouse where they were grown is the kind of sportsman we need more of, he provided all the space, and did all the watering for free.

DWR employees gathered the seed, the greenhouse germinated and planted it in small containers, Dedicated Hunters transplated them to larger pots, and now sportsmen and the DWR are going to plant them. The pots are reusable, and the greenhouse says we can keep using their facilities, if we can do 10,000 a year for the next 10 years I really feel it will make a huge difference for the Cache Deer herd, which is the Northern Regions hardest hunted deer herd. Sportsmen have been involved every step of the way, MDF came through with money for the pots, SFW has helped with transplanting and weeding, it has really been a cooperative project.

There were also quite a few sagebrush and bitterbrush seedlings planted last year on the Cache as well. This is all part of the work instigated by a Deer Recovery Committee for the Cache Unit. I can't remember how many were planted on the Murry Farm property recently acquired by the forest service (I think it was close to 10,000), but I do remember that we did 5,000 on the Richmond WMA in northern Cache Valley. Those plants were doing really well as of last fall, and should really be taking off with the great snowpack this year. Some pics of those seedlings.

This is really exciting to me! We need more great projects like these to help us grow our deer herd! To everyone involved, keep up the good work! And, to those not involved, get get out there!

Dax, Thanks for the pictures! We had about 40 people helping. Like you said, thanks to Rudy and Sons greenhouses. They are my cousins. There are about 10,000 plants. We planted about 1,500. Lots more to plant. They are planning on planting more this Sat. Thanks, to all sportsmen groups. Call Jodie for more info.801)791-8589 DWR coordinator. We need to get plants in the ground when we still have moisture in the ground. KTC I'm not coordination this project. Just helping out what I can. Thanks,Greg

Greg,

Regardless, you are helping and doing something. Something most of us could learn from. I met you at the SFW booth at the expo. You do in fact volunteer a lot of your time. Thanks.

Those pictures are great to see. I think we need pictures. They tell the story much better than a few words on a post. To the 40 guys and gals spending their Saturday helping all of us, thanks.

Thanks for the report. And yes, those pictures really say a lot. Good healthy looking plants that will provide a lot of feed. Keep up the good work!

Wish I was closer, Put a call into the local High school and tell the coaches that you will make a donations to their sport(Baseball,Wrestling Basketball,Football, ETC) teams if they can get you some bodies, I think you would end up with some good turn-outs of kids.
Our High School wrestling team use to clean yards for donations and it worked pretty good. we always had a good turnout.
