I need to purchase some pants - any suggestions or recomendations? I need something a bit heavier than ordinary jeans. I will be hunting in mid to low 30's and of course could be colder and will be wearing Under Armor thermals on. I've got rain gear to put over all this if need be.

Make sure they go over your boot tops;) All kidding aside some guys use army wool pants from the surplus store. I use Carharts which are good in the wind and brush. They can also be worn more than a couple weeks a year.

+1 for the Carharts. You can also get the Carharts with the reinforced knees. They are a pretty stout pant.

Wool pants would be my top choice

Second choice would be some thisulate lined pants +/- goretex

If you're going to wear UA thermals, then why not buy a lighter pant that you could use during the warmer times of the year? I just bought a pair of Microtex pants from Cabela's, and love them. Been wearing them the last 3 or 4 days, with mornings in the high 20's to low 30's, a little breezy out, and they seem to be reasonably wind proof and warm. I am also a big fan of anything wool, love that stuff!

In regards to Carharts, I know that a lot of guys wear them, but I also know that in the survival classes I've taken, the catch-phrase is "cotton kills". I personally never wear anything cotton when hunting, because you never know what could happen while you're out there, so you might as well stack the odds in your favor, and prepare for the unexpected.

Yep I'm a big fan of carharts or similar pants. They can be a bit noisy, but there is NOTHING tougher out there. If you're doing a lot of sitting, crawling, walking through brush, etc. they can't be beat. Go with the reinforced knee stuff and try to wear them out. The only reason I have to buy new ones every year is because I'm getting fatter. :)

There's is nothing that can put up with the abuse that pants go through in Mexico like carharts. They don't pick up burrs either.

If you're going to get wet then wear something else or atleast wear gators. I use them in the snow with gators and have been fine. Cotton doesn't dry fast, and once it's wet you're screwed if it is cold. I really like to use a combination of wool and down to layer with if it's cold.

I broke down and bought some SITKA this year. It's great for hiking and a lot of activity, but I'm not sure how it'll be in extreeme cold, and I can tell that Mexico or similar country would eat it up fast. The base layers are sweet though and super comfortable. Nothing can ruin a good hunt faster that the dreaded krotch rot ;-) Just ask cowslayer :)

I like the Carhartt too and have a pair of them. Their excellent in the brush where I hunt here in Texas. I was wanting something a bit heavier for cooler temps. I'm leaning towards the Cabela's Revolution Fleece or just a pair of wool pants.

Carharts with reinforced knees for me, but drag them around for a mile or two behind the truck to break them in

For cold weather I'd either go for the wool or the celcius bibs by Sitka.

Fleece is fine for sitting in a stand but man does it collect a lot of crap and get dirty fast if you're hiking much.

I'll probably be wearing shorts this weekend, but if I wasn't I would wear Carharts.

Gamehide or Carharts, the Gamehide are really quite and don't pickup burr's either.

REI makes a really comfortable pant for hiking in cool weather called Mistrial pants and they shed water pretty good. We wear them for snow shoeing as well. The the only draw back is they come in a flat black I wished they made them in tan or brown. These pants move with you legs no binding and they do a fair job of cutting the wind.

If there is any proof of a man in a hunt it is not whether he killed a deer or elk but how he hunted it.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-15-08 AT 08:22PM (MST)[p]COTTON KILLS! It is very dangerous to wear in the mountains this time of year.

Cabela's Revolution Fleece Dry Plus pants, they come in Insulated or Uninsulated.

I used the Uninsulated with fleece long johns with temps in the teens, and never got cold, even on a 4 wheeler.

Totally waterproof/windproof/breathable. They don't get burrs, and water beads up, so they don't get heavy when wet.

Best clothing I own.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-16-08 AT 12:56PM (MST)[p]You guys wear pants when you hunt?? Are you kidding me??? Hilarious!!

Uhhh, why am I the only one laughing... you are SUPPOSED to only wear a breechcloth right?? Right??

EEL!!! Have you been lying to me again??

LOL!

I don't care what kind you get, make sure your pockets aren't hanging down to the backs of your knees and that your underwear ain't showing!

#1 choice would be King Of The Mountain pants (really cold)
#2 choice regular wool pants (cold)
#3 choice regular jeans (normal hunting)
