A buddy an I are putting in for 201 next year for muzzleloader. Need info. on unit ! Anything will help. Thanks Randy

Not a good deer unit at all. I wish you luck but you will likely not see any deer over 170. The populations in the unit are low, etc. The only reason a person should hunt 201 is due to a lower pressure unit that is remote. You can find more and significantly bigger bucks in general units. If you find anything Wide than 26" or over 150 it is a likely a shooter.

The country is awesome and due to limited hunter numbers it is a quality hunt for fun, but not a trophy hunt at all...

elks96, thanks for the input. The guys at Epic outdoors say all together a different story, they say good bucks in the 180- 190 class can be taken in this unit with muzzleloader if you work to find them.Thats why I came to forum to get more guys input. Thank you Randy

I Wouldn't trust huntin fool as far as I could throw them. Elks knows that country and if Coloradoboy chimes in I'd listen to what they have to say.

14 points is rough. You have a few good options. The thing with 2, 10, 201 is none of them are really managed for deer quality. They are managed for elk quality. The low tag numbers are a result of low deer herd numbers. As for the statement, you can shoot a 180-190 with hard work and some luck, that can be said about every single unit and hunt in CO that I know.

Like I said unit 201 is cool and the reason to deer hunt it is not for trophy potential, but for solitude and low pressure from other hunters.

When deciding your unit consider all things, what type of hunt do
You want? In unit 201 there is not much of the unit that is not easily accessed by vehicle. It is great for glassing, but with the road and trails structure it is not hard to hunt. There is limited private so it has really good access and minimal access issues. It is lower elevations no alpine hunting. Cold Spring Mountain is a giant sage and stunted growth covered feature on top and north slope with some service berry and mahogany mixed in. South slope of cold spring is steep, hot dry and thick. Rocky with pinons. Diamond peak a large cone shaped mountain with some south slope meadows minimal aspen and dark timber on the north side. There is a smaller peak as well just to the west, forget its name... some river bottom area along the Green River and Brown Park...

It would be a cool hunt because you will be there in the elk rut and the elk activity might make the deer hunting worth it...

Make a list of what you want. I am not sure the point requirements for other hunts, but in your list look at how you want to hunt. Time of year, early muzzy hunting in T-shirt's, late hunting deeper snow, do you want to hunt deserts open country, above treeline, large aspen stands, pines? Rut hunt? With your points there are many options. Do you want to camp at your truck? Back pack in? Etc. get all of that sorted out comeback to the forums and and ask for suggestions using you hunt criteria... Hard to recommend any unit based just on deer size...

I want to thank you guys for taking the time to give me an my buddy a little insight on Unit 201 in Colorado.Just a little info on me, I'm 59 have had lower back surgery, have had 2 knee surgery's in left knee an still to this day get shoots in both. So I was trying to pick some country that I thought I would have a chance to get out an walk a little. My buddy is younger than me an wanted to hunt Unit 35 but I don't think I can get around there like I could in 201.

You got good advice about 201 deer above. It is a pleasant hunt, but the odds of shooting a big buck are remote. A 24" 4x4 is doable, but this is not a trophy unit.
