15 Ticks to Decide ... You Shootin'?

It's opening day on a 4th season hunt in the best unit in Colorado. You see him at 450 yards. You've got only 15 seconds to hit the snow ready to shoot and we'll say 10 more seconds to pull the trigger before he's gone forever. Can you do it? Will you do it? How big do you think he is?

Thank you all for making use of the site. I really do appreciate it.

Hard to get a good look on a phone screen. Heavy buck, pushes 30? mains don't curl in much but I think low 190?s? Boom.

Boom,
Who that other guy who going to take him since I have rush my shot. LOL

I would take the shot, I think that's he's between 190 and 195 but I've seen so few this big my scoring probably isn't accurate.

Well, he' s bedded so dont know why i only have 15 seconds... i would try to get closer and definitely take the shot!

He looks great to me. If on 4th season tag with only 4 days i would probably not waste time looking for anything bigger!

Ground check him for a score... looks over 190" without trying to calculate a score.

You got a Front View of Him Founder?

I second what elk said. I would like to see a front facing look if possible but if not I would probably try to get solid rest for a shot anyway. I think I could make up my mind and 15 seconds to shoot that buck.
If I draw my Gunnison fourth season tag this year I plan on getting there a week early and scouting before the hunt. If I don't see anything bigger during the week I plan on scouting I would shoot that buck on opening day.

450 is a bit much for me. He's bedded facing away below me. So depending on wind I'd try to get closer. Dam nice buck but I don't think he's near 30 but I like the mass and character....

At first glance he looks big enough, but, you said it yourself, 1st day of a 4th season hunt in the BEST unit in Colorado.... I've waited to many years to make a rash decision without better views and angles. Besides it seems these days I like hunting better than I do killing, lol, or so it seems cause I usually let all the bigger ones walk and take a genetically inferior one on last day.

Doing a rough score in 15 seconds, I would guess he is 190? +. Might even net typical over 190? or have a gross score over 200?. I wouldn't hesitate on him with the tag I drew in NM or the one I'll likely draw in Colorado. If I was in a spot that I could get prone, and rest my gun across my pack, I could kill him in 20 seconds. From his body language, it looks like I would have time to double check the range and take my time getting a solid rest or putting a stalk to get closer.

Big, heavy and bladed. I would be shooting.

I'll Bet if You Put that Buck in Front of 99.97% of TARDS in the Field They'd GROUND POUND Him without even giving Him a Chance to Get back on His Feet!

If I had 12 seconds before he bedded, that would be my first choice but I think I can plow it through that little bush since it's close to him.
My answer is, YES.

I would put him 184_189 and I would let him walk I probably kill a littler buck later on but that's just my luck.

Life ain't about waiting for the Strom to pass. Its about learning to hunt in the rain!

Not if it's opening day in the best unit in CO. But lucky for me I don't hunt great units, so he would be down where I hunt.

The more I look at that buck the more I like him.
Bucks like that are few and far between even in the best units in Colorado.
I have a lot of experience hunting mule deer in the west including the Kaibab the Arizona strip and the top units in Nevada, Idaho and Wyoming.
You guys that are saying you would pass on that buck must not realize what you're looking at.
That's one of the best bucks I've seen posted on this site in a while dead or alive.
I can only hope that if I draw my Gunnison fourth season tag this year that I see a buck of that quality.

That's close to a dream situation for a mule deer hunter. I know I'm breaking the rules, but since he's unaware, I'd set up, take my time, and when he stands it's a done deal!

No Sense it waiting for him to stand!

If you wait for that you're waiting for somebody else to GROUND POUND him at 2300 yards away!

Day 1 of the 4th season in the best unit in Colorado, I pass. I've waited many years for this hunt and I'm not taking the first buck to be considered. Unless it's a no brainer, which this buck is not, I keep hunting. I can probably find him again if need be. I might be making a mistake, but I don't think so.
Anyway, it's fun to think about. Wish I was going this year.

booty boy is really gonna be upset with only 15 seconds to get His Loin Cloth on & Nock a Stick!:D

Little far for my liking. Everything would have to be a perfect setup.

That being said, if I waited that long for a tag, I would want to spend a few more days in the woods. If I did drop him on opening morning, I might not tell the wife and kids for 48 hours. I'd have too much fun spending and extra day or two out there.
