My First Archery Experiences

This year starts out for me like it does for many others. I have been debating on what to apply for. It is a little simpler for me because I only apply in one state and only apply for two areas in that state, and only for one species. The state is Nevada and I love to hunt the Ruby Mountains (area 10) or area 6 because that is where I grew up. The species I apply for is mule deer and have been doing so since I was old enough to apply. I have hunted many times there and have only taken one deer and that was in 2008. The only debate I have this year is if I want to try my luck at archery hunting. I have never archery hunted before, but it is something I have always wanted to do. I started shooting a bow a few years ago while living in Montana, but my archery hunting hopes were put on the back burner as I drew a rifle tag in area 10. I did take a decent, heavy 4x4 that year. The following year my archery hunt was again put on hold as I drew a rifle tag in Oregon and came up empty handed. I would also like to archery hunt elk in Montana this year. So my season starts with the application process in Nevada and I am still undecided if I want to try for an archery tag, I have until April 18 to make up my mind. The tag in Montana is an over the counter tag so no application process there. Just need to get motivated and start getting in shape and shooting my bow again. I am fairly new to posting on this site although I have followed it for some time now, so once I figure out how to post pictures I will post some of my area 10 rifle buck from 2008. Best of luck to all those applying to limited draw areas.

Well it has already been a little bit of a disappointing hunting season for me. I was really looking forward to heading back to my home state of Nevada to archery hunt mule deer in the high country. Unfortunately I couldn't scrape together the funds that are required to apply, buy the tag if drawn, and get over there from North Dakota. That is ok though as I am still a resident of Montana. I plan on purchasing the over the counter elk and deer tags with hopes of getting an elk and deer with my bow. Next week I will start getting in better shape so that I can hike up and down the nasty, steep mountains of Montana.

Being able to get out and do anything this year has been a real struggle. Long hours at work, new kid, and moving have really put a damper on anything hunt related for me. I have been shooting my bow and getting more comfortable and longer ranges. I have stuck a few ground squirrels and that sure does a lot for the confidence.

On the plus side I am moving to Idaho soon so that will make getting back to my stomping grounds in Montana a little easier. It will also make applying and hunting back in Northern Nevada a little more reasonable. Can't wait to get to Idaho and start wondering around in the hills to find myself some hunting grounds there. The next few years should be great.
