What do you want to hunt in Africa?

LAST EDITED ON Mar-21-18 AT 08:48AM (MST)[p]This forum has been really quiet for a while now, so I thought I'd post up a new topic for discussion...

A fair number of us who visit this site have enjoyed hunts in various African countries. Some of us plan to go back and I'm curious about where you'll be hunting. But I'm also curious about which animals you'd really like to hunt. Which animal would you travel all the way to Africa to hunt?

I'll start things off, as I'm doing a short hunt in Zambia this fall for Sitatunga. I hunted Sitatunga in Botswana back in 1989 as part of a 24 day safari, but didn't get one. We were also hunting a lot of other game including a couple Buffalo and mainly focused on lion. I only saw 2 Sitatunga rams on that safari, got a shot at one and missed him at about 350 yards. I was shooting while laying on a tree limb about 15 feet off the ground. It wasn't the most stable situation. I've always wanted to hunt them again, so this time I'm going late in the season when things are drier and I'm hunting an area, Tondwa, which has many Sitatunga and a high success rate. They do hunt from Machans, but mainly by walking and spotting them on the floodplain, then stalking in for a shot. I'll also have licenses for a puku, bushpig and reedbuck, but this is a Sitatunga hunt and if that's the only animal I shoot, I'll be very happy indeed.

So, what about the rest of you?

Going to Botswana in May. Main animal is kudu. Hope to kill 2...LOL.

Be aware if going to or passing thru South Africa and applying for a SAPS permit your 4457 needs to be signed in the year you are applying.

This means you have to update your 4457 with US customs each trip if going to or traveling thru South Africa.

In my case my nearest customs agent is 200 miles away, but if renewing a 4457 he will take info in an email and mail the 4457.

Dan, you're going with Tholo, correct? I'll be very interested in hearing your thoughts about the quality of kudu and eland there, also gemsbok. I almost booked a hunt with Herman Nienaber (sp?) in the same area, but opted for a Sitatunga hunt instead since this is the last year hunts will be conducted on Tondwa.

Yes, going with Tholo. Peak of Kudu rut, looking forward, only 2 months to go.

My buddy and I are looking at going to Africa or Namibia. I would like to go for kudu, gemsbok, impala, blue wildebeest and warthog. Just not sure who to go with yet. Any recommendations

If you're looking for Namibia, check out Kowas Hunting Safaris. Their kudu and oryx hunts are top notch. I ended up taking a 55" kudu after a two day search. I can tell you I had a great hunt and photo safari with them this past June. I am going back in 2020 for some unfinished business on some of the species I skipped over. Eland is on that list. I ended up taking 11 animals on my previous hunt so I will have to branch out to some of the smaller species like steenbok, duiker, probably baboon. I've also been thinking about giraffe but I can go after a lot of other animals for what it would cost to have that shipped, tanned, and turned into a rug or shoulder mount. I had so much fun and I loved the country so much that I wanted to go back with some others where it will be their first time. I'm adding a Victoria Falls trip this time as well.

There are actually quite a few others in Namibia that you cannot go wrong with based on the tons of hunt reports on the other forums.

Going in August this time for eland, gemsbuck, black wilderbeest, waterbuck, and all four colors of the springbuck. Then staying over another week and hunting buffalo and sable with another PH. First hunt is with Jules of the Karoo and the second hunt is with Tyrone Milne. Can't wait.

There is plenty of good places in Namibia just don't over pay. I would tell you to look at Pieter delport eintracht Jagd safaris. Hands down would of the best bangs for you buck you can get in Namibia. Will be 1000 or more under some of the bigger name places and equal or better quality trophies. Pm me if you would like more info or to get my cell number.

Between all of us, there should be some good hunt reports in the coming months. I hope everyone will take lots of pictures and post reports about your adventures. Good luck everyone.

I'm headed to Limpopo to hunt with Herman Scheepers and Tarek Jansen on June 7th. I'm after Kudu, Sable, Nyala, and Zebra. My wife want a Gemsbok, Impala, Blesbok, and a Bush Buck. We are looking forward to it.

I have done 3 Plains game hunts over the years, and I'm currently shopping around for Buffalo hunts in "Wild Africa". That one is a dream of mine, and I'm excited to be looking at African hunts again. It's been a few years.

If you want a "wild" Buffalo hunt, you should consider the Luangwa Valley in Zambia. Muchinga Safaris has an excellent area, Chifunda, that has very good Buffalo hunting. He books through Mark Young of Mark's Exclusive Adventures. Thor Kirchener hunts on Munyamadzi, which is another excellent Buffalo area. I don't think you could go wrong with either choice.

There are also many great options in Zimbabwe. The Bubye Valley Conservancy and Save Valley Conservancy are both well known for their excellent Buffalo hunting. In Zim, you might consider Mokore Safaris, again booked through Mark Young. They hunt in Save and also the Sengwa Research area, as well as Coutada 9 in Mozambique.

Lots more good options out there, but I don't think you could go wrong with any of these.

Going to the Eastern Cape in August with my son. I'm after Sable, Caracal, Vaal Rhebok, Bushbuck, Bushpig and Black Wildebeeste. Son is interested in Nyala, Kudu, Gemsbok, Zebra and springbok.

Headed out next month to hunt gemsbuck, impala, blesbuck and sure like the looks of the springbucks! Should be a good time.

I just received my latest box from Africa only yesterday. I think I need to go again and have been loosely planning it for awhile. I left my PH a game cam the last trip and he sends me photos. Likely I will do as I did last two and use the same two outfits for the next hunt.

1) with LJ Safaris - blue duiker, grysbok, klipspringer, and vaal rhebok. In the "off" times, do some culling on a nearby property that needs to reduce animal numbers.

2) with Rhinoster Hoek Safaris - my primary with Warren will to find the biggest kudu ever taken off his place. Who knows if we will do it, but should be fun to try as he certainly has plenty around. In the off times, maybe look to upgrade my duiker and steenbok collections. I think he has a black wildebeest or two that may need to be looked over.

I hope to do all of this with newly built rifles, a 6X45 being built now and, if possible a 280 AI as well.

Good luck and have fun to everyone with trips planned.

Well, my Zambia hunt got modified a bit. Originally, I was just going to Tondwa for 7-days, to hunt Sitatunga and a perhaps few other animals like puku and bushpig. It's a long way to go for just a 7-day hunt, so I added on an additional 5-days to the front end to hunt eland, bushbuck and maybe another animal or 2 like Kudu or Kafue Flats Lechwe. So now it's 12-days of hunting over 2 different areas of Zambia. One is in the south and the other is as far north as you can go without being in the Congo. Should be an excellent adventure.

2019 will be a father-son hunt in Tanzania, mainly for big Buffalo.

I quit posting everywhere I took a mo th long honey moon and traveled the world and did a giant safari with my new wife in august. I took a 59 7/8? kudu in limpopo. Had a great time.

Tholonhas some MASSIVE kudu.

Its one of the better destinations for amazing hunts with awesome trophy quality. You wont regret iit.

Dont bother asking for a hunting report. I still have a vulture that has been circling me for 6 years with her claws out.

Thanks for the recommendations! A friend of mine hunted the Luangwa with Muchinga several years ago and had a great safari. I would like to see Zambia some day. My bucket list is to see some of wild Tanzania, and I will do that one of these days.

I'm looking at the Zambezi valley, and other areas in Zimbabwe so far for Value. May be able to add a tuskless Elephant to the deal.

I always go open minded. No package. Just go hunting and when something big shows up put it on the salt. Headed back in July 2019. Just a PG safari. Hope to come across White Blesbok, Caracal, Common Reedbuck, etc. will never pass a big Kudu, Nyala or Bushbuck.

Hope to hunt the Big 5 someday. Taking my son is my top priority first.
