My dad has never really cared much about score but has always wanted to kill a mature buck with mass, so when the UDWR announced 3 years ago that they were introducing a management hunt on the Paunsaugunt I knew that was his best chance at reaching that goal. We looked over many bucks before my dad decided this was the one he wanted. It was a very fun hunt with my brother and dad, one that will stick with me forever.

My dad and I.

Some sheds I found during the hunt.

Wow that's a GREAT deer and a great story. HOw many big ones did you run across that you weren't allowed to take?

We saw about a half a dozen mature bucks a day. I didn't get many photos because I was busy checking for how many points they had. Here's a few photos of 2 bucks I did manage to catch on film.

This was the biggest one we saw.

At the time it took much deliberation to shoot the deer which I shot. I had my finger on and off the trigger many times before shooting. Some friends kept telling me it was a good buck. Anyway I shot it and wasn't to happy with it until I had it checked in and the DWR Officer told me it would score 175" - 3x5. I thought he was just trying to make me feel good. I took the deer to a taxidermist to see if he wanted the cape. He said that he thought the Officer was right on. The DWR measured it at a little over 25", but the taxidermist measured it at just a fraction short of 27". My conservative measurements tally was 174 1/4". I felt better about it then.

Would like to compare notes with you sometime.

Congratulations to Mr. Scarth. Great buck and great memories made. I was out on this hunt with a good friend. It surprised me just how tuff it is to make absolute certain that the buck you take is legal. We looked over several bucks that were likely legal but we just couldn't be positive until a 4x3 gave us a great look at about one hundred yards.
