Has anyone ever hunted the Vernon unit? Any good luck on big bucks? I've spent a little time in the unit many years ago and know of a few real slugs that have been taken out there. I'd sure like to have a tag myself, and I'll be applying for some of these tags and hoping I'm a lucky one to draw. Would be a fun hunt!

The boys at The Big Outdoors Expo have 10 Vernon Landowner Tags Available for draw to some lucky hunters. Entries are $10.00 each. You all can apply for all 10 tags if you'd like to really increase your odds. AND, you could actually draw more than one tag and take a friend or family member. These vouchers are completely transferable, so put your kids in too!

This is another chance to get your names in to draw a quality buck tag. We all know they're hard to come by, so the more opportunities you take advantage of, the better your odds are of catching a sweet tag and harvesting a trophy buck.

If you are concerned about legitimacy and cc info, you can always buy a prepaid Visa or MC and use that instead.

I'd sure like to find out if it's worth $10! I'll bet I can find a deer worth $10.

Founder,
I think I'll definitely throw $100.00 in the hat to find out. It was worth the $5.00 I spent on it last year! Lol

I will give it a whiirl for 10 bucks, any time spent chasing mule deer is a bonus. Maybe Rmanwill and I both will win a tag.

The Vernon unit isn't worth hunting. Too many crab clawed bucks and three points. Too many tags. Too many side by sides. I wouldn't waste my money. Right Muley_73? :)

Yep, that's pretty much it}>

Too many tags = True
Too many side by sides = get off the road away from them. That's where the big deer are at.
Not worth hunting = depends on what you expect. It's not Premium, but there are 190+ deer out there. Just need to know where to go where the hunters aren't and where the big bucks are. Get away from them side by sides.

Hello Fellas

Thanks to those of you applying. This is a great opportunity to draw a limited entry deer hunt for a simple application fee. Keep in mind these vouchers are transferable so if you are lucky enough to draw you can give it to someone else or sale it as well. Put your kids in as there is no minimum age to apply. Utah fish and game regulations apply to be able to hunt. You can draw multiple tags but only hunt 1.

The people that are drawn will be notified by phone and/or email from myself personally on or before June 15th. They will then receive the Vernon Buck Voucher that they will redeem at an authorized location. Permit fees and hunting license are paid for by the recipient.

These are Land Owner vouchers that are good unit wide. You must obtain permission to hunt private land .

Please feel free to contact me with any questions.

Happy Holidays.

Big deer are where they are, nothing more nothing less.. guess you can try and put odds in favor by separating yourself from other hunters. A 190 deer can be bedded 100 yds. From a main road or 4 miles in.

I hunted (with a buddy that had the tag) the desert unit in WA. Same basic type of hunt. Closed except for draw, desert terrain, etc. I heard the exact stuff going in. It used to be good, lots of little ones, too many yotes. All were true but there were a ton of deer (and bucks). The biggest buck was about 2 miles from a rd. We missed him, but got a good one though (by our standards. We were the last hunt (except for a late bow) that would be tough. We must have seen 30+ 4yr old bucks. I am basically saying that when an area gets to be draw only, it sure is neat how many deer can do well compared to areas where anyone can go.

I did hear from locals that quite a few deer get poached out there as well.

I don't mean to pile on here but my wife had this tag last year and I was super disappointed in this unit. My dad had this tag in 2012 and it was awesome. I am not sure what happened but there are way fewer big deer. The biggest problem I saw with this hunt is it seemed like for every 1 tag there were 5+ people. I am sure there are some big deer still roaming around in this unit but they are defiantly few and far between.

That simply can not be true. There was a scientific poll done here on MM that states otherwise.

Big,
That's really weird. I set up camp on the Thursday before the hunt started and left the unit 10 days later. I didn't cover the entire unit during that time but I cover a huge portion of it and almost all of the ?hot spots?. I ran into a few camps that had multiple tags and in those camps there might have been a total of 5 or 6 people. The most I saw with one hunter while out hunting was a few hunters that had two buddies with them. I ran in a couple guides that were the hunter, his son and the guide. Another guided hunter that was two guides and one hunter, one more guide that had 3 guides for 2 hunters. One of the hunters tagged out early and the 3 guides stayed to help the remaining hunter. Most by far looked to one hunter and a friend or family member. I had my son and friend on the first day, my son and dad the second day and then me and pops until Thursday. Then back to one buddy out helping glass. This seemed the norm to me which is the way it should be, friends and family enjoying some time chasing bucks.

It's funny because there were some big camps but for the most part it looked like it was friends and family camping and the hunter out hunting with a friend or two. With 100 tags if a quarter of the tag holders had 5 people hunting with them it would have been a zoo. I just didn't see that at all. But that was my observation.

Huh? In the area I went opening morning there 4 side by sides with 13 people and only 2 of them had guns/tags. Thats about as scientific as I get.

Its good to hear that Muley...I love that unit and have family that lives in Vernon. Hearing your thoughts make me feel better about putting in for that unit again.

This isnt meant to knock anyone, but who cares if there is 2 people or 25 people? I mean, if that is what they want to do, then so be it. Id has zero effect on the deer or the heard quality and size of mature animals. If I draw the Paunsaguant, I hope to have a ton of eyes out helping me. And my family and friends in camp waiting for me to return with a big ole rack and some meat. I think this is what its all about anyways. The same should happen on general units. Get the family out and camp. And if 1 day the whole clan wants to go out and spot, great. Chances are they wont see a monster that way,but you never know.

Darn good Vernon buck.

I've worked on guzzlers out there that were all burned up for dedicated hunter hours-
How is the Whole Unit a Landowner Tag? That's a Limited Entry unit.
Can you just put in once per person buying the full amount $100 dollars?

Landowner Tags are good for the whole unit. Same as a regular draw tags. Landowners receive tags because game animals often live on their land.
You can apply for all 10 tags if you'd like and be in 10 separate draws. If you draw multiple tags, you could sell or give away the extras. You can only use one personally.

So for those of you applying for one or all of these Vernon tags, do you apply for just one or all ten? How much dough you throw into the mix?

It seems that what you described is the description of many mule deer units across the West. Hunters are getting better and better every year.

Did any of you apply for these tags at the Big Outdoors Expo?

Brian: Thanks for allowing me to win the tickets. The wife and I came down, and saw very little activity at the booth the entire time we were there. Might be good odds for those who applied.

If it's not looking like you're going to score on a Utah tag this year, here's another draw to consider throwing your name into. Good luck!

Some more Vernon bucks.
