Schmalts got his orxy, what a fun hunt!!

Wow, this was a fun hunt. Part lope, part elk since we ended up in the mountains!
The hunt was on the White sand missle range in NM for free range Oryx (gemsbok) that were introduced in the 60's. I took both my bow and rifle and after i saw the sparse cover and how well these things could see i left the bow in the case and with only 3 days to hunt i wasnt about to mess around. The first morning we spent a most of the time in the flats. Saw about 15 orxy but nothing real good. Its not like the good old days from what i was told and the huge ones are far and few. in the evening i wanted to head to the mountains and found this one playing around in desert bighorn type of country on a steep mountain side. first shot was 550 yards and i held over too high and missed. it ran around the corner of the mountain and i manged to get another glimps of him when i rounded the bend. I ran up the hill to intercept him and after about 10 seconds to get my wind back LOL i took one at 450 and hit him a little too forward towards the neck. He took off and i figured lets rock and pounded 2 more for a hope and prayer but no go. Then for some reason when he crested the hill he stopped to look back. well i let the last one go and he rolled down the hill with one through the shoulders at close to 500 yards. Man i tell you what, i dont hardly ever rifle hunt but it was cool to kill something that far away. Sorry about the lack of field pictures but cameras are not permitted on the range . What a cool looking animal, big, strong, amd just pretty neat with the long tail down to the ground.
He was just under 36 inches long and the next day my Buddy Tim got one of the best bulls taken that was 37" .

Vin, I had to call and tell them i would ot be out before dark. I shot it around 4pm and we had to pack it out on our backs since it was in the mountains. I was the 31st or 33rd, dont remember exactly of the day and probably the last one out.
The next day we got out around 3pm and we were around #70 if i remember correct. The total kill was 118 out of 130 and 2 no-shows.
The last 2 days a lot of smaller ones fell. I saw one at the butcher shop about 120 pounds! I guess guys felt pressure of getting skunked. The butcher said only about 20% were over 35 inches long. So about the same numbers killed every day. We hunted the mountains the whole next day and didnt see many but the terrain was great for getting the shots off since you had hills to stalk behind. the bad part is we had to pack them out. It took 2 1/2 hours to get my buddies out and it was just over one ridge from the road!! about 300 yards only. We were in the mountains NW of the check point.

Congrats on a nice trophy!

Why aren't you allowed cameras on the range?

Not sure. Seems silly to me. Once in a lifetime hunt and no field photos. But yet you could take GPS, cell phones and radios. I would think GPS would be more of a concern. The only thing to photo was a few radar sights and debris from Drones and blown up missles and aircraft.

Schmalts congrads on your oryx! They certainly are cool critters aren't they! Sure wish NMex would allow them to scatter and more guys could enjoy hunting them, but I guess since they are exotic to NMex there is a lot of strife.

I've been on a couple on-range hunts and there is a lot of top secret stuff that goes on behind those gates. It sure would be neat to take photos and video of live oryx....guess someday I'll have to travel to Africa and film them in their native grounds. My buddy and I tried to take video of oryx that were on the military base last year just off the highway and within about a minute were surrounded by military guys with radios telling us to get in our vehicle and leave!

Congrads again on your oryx...I'm sure you'll enjoy the meat...it is THE best wild game I've ever tasted!

Way to go buddy, great trophy! New Mexico has been kind to you this year. Nice to see a good hard-working hunter be rewarded.

RE: Schmalts got his orxy, what a fun hunt!!

Way to go, Schmaltsie!!! Nice looking bull.

RE: Schmalts got his orxy, what a fun hunt!!

Great job man. I got one last year right at 36". It is one fun hunt. I went with a buddy last year and get to go again the end of Jan.

It is a blast.

I also shot mine at about 500 yards.

300 ultra mag. One flat shooting hard hitting gun.

Awesome - NM was good to you this year!

Schmalts,
What part of White Sands were you hunting? I just drew the Rhodes Canyon area for Oct 15-16 2005. Anyone out there with any advise on how and where to hunt would not go to waste. Vinnihunt, you have had some terrific success as well, do you have any tips for a novice?

I was in Rhodes as well. Me and my buddy had the best luck in ther mountains. The flats were too crowded and only seen smaller animals there. You will see nice bulls in the mountains!! seems odd but they like that steep hillsides and you will find that the hills offer cover for a stalk. Both of ours were less than a half mile off the road. dont be afraid to hike over a few ridges

RE: Schmalts got his orxy, what a fun hunt!!

Thanks, I hear its pretty hectic getting out of morning orientation but looking forward to the hunt. Is there maps available or topo's to do a little pre-hunt planning or is that a waste of time? If this is pretty much road hunting I guess there is no reason to bring along a quad. I will be using a 7MM MAG, I hope that is enough. If you know any others that hunted Rhodes Canyon let me know, I'd like to have a good understanding of the whole area as best I can so I know where to focus on for a good animal.

RE: Schmalts got his orxy, what a fun hunt!!

They give you a map when you get there. It shows the hunt boundaries. Dont worry about other hunters too much, there is hundreds of square miles to hunt.
You might ank Vinihunt what he thinks, he was there the same time i was and hunted the other end of the unit, and did well with his wife. I wish i would have saved my map, i could have penciled in a few areas that i saw animals in. Dont worry, hunt hard and dont shooot a dink on the first day. Its not like they are around every bend, you really need to hunt and glass to find one you like. take good optics.

RE: Schmalts got his orxy, what a fun hunt!!

I am a Leica enthusiast, I have 8X25's,10X42s and both the 62mm and 77mm spotting scopes. I archery hunt by nature so optics were never much of a concern. But, I go with friends scouting quite a bit for their rifle hunts and all of them carried Swarovski's and Leica's and I was hooked and had to have 'em. I don't usually put in for coues hunts but I enjoy the heck out of scouting for them with my friends so I know the importance of having quality optics. Really psyched up for this hunt, thanks for the info.

Just curious - how does Oryx taste? Looks like a beautiful trophy. The Great North American African Oryx. COOL!

Its taste puts elk in the back burner... But it is a little tougher. The flavor is mild like a domestic cow. The burger is awsome for everything. I ground 70% of it. The steaks are hit and miss, great taste but some are tough. Even the back straps are a little grainy in texture. But once again, the flavor is awsome. You just need to cook it right, and never past medium rare is my motto unless its burger or a roast that is cooked all day.
