Anyone have advice on the best moose area in Wyoming for a non-resident with 17 points? I realize I cant hunt wilderness and don't want to use horses.

Thanks

What are you looking for; 100% draw odds, high harvest success, trophy potential, good access to public land.....

If you provide more details, Ill give you my opinion :)

unit 40 is a high success unit, with decent bulls. Lots of private, but permission is easy to obtain. Not a wilderness hunt by any means, most moose are viewed from the highway. An easy hunt for average bulls.

Unfortunately, in this day and time, not really. There are 3189 non-residents who have already been waiting longer than you. These 3189 souls all possess from 18 to 24 points going in to this year's draw. Since Wyoming gives out less than 50 bull tags per year to NR's, it's going to be a long, long wait if you have less points than that. Point creep rules the day. Which means that, depending on your age, you may not be able to draw one of the best areas for a long time, at least not in the preference portion of the draw.

But Wyoming does publish the kill success rates and the public land percentage for each unit on their website. Very easy to look up.

Unfortunately 17 years is a relatively short wait in terms of Wyoming Moose.
Even in the best units trophy bull size has diminished.
Find a unit you can draw and give it your best shot, or cut your losses and get out, like most everyone else.

Sorry, 17 points is not worth a pile of beans for Wyoming moose if you want a guaranteed real trophy moose. Find an area you can draw within the next 5+ years that you can obtain good access and take triple the time off during the hunt. Scout it hard in mid August till the bow opener as bulls may move a little but not too much. Then come back for the last couple days of bow and rifle opener as the rut will be in full swing. Then come back mid to late October and hunt the bulls moving to and in their migration areas (like burn areas). I did all that years ago and wound up taking a Boone and Crockett moose in mid October in middle tier unit. Otherwise save up your cash and go guided.

U have a recommendation? What do you know about Unit 2 or 35 or 40? Looks like I can draw those.

Thanks

That's sound advise. I hunted moose last year, spent 9 days with a bow in September. Wasted my time, should have been elk hunting. Ended up seeing moose on 2 of those days, and the bulls I saw were spooky as whitetails. Went back in October and had a bull hear us walking in the downfall and he came charging into us from a long ways away. I never even grunted, he just heard us stepping and breaking sticks. Came in grunting to 10 yards. Wish I had my bow. If I was to do it again, I wouldn't even go until October. BTW - I drew with 17, but picked an unpopular unit with little to no information.

No reason to go guided for a Shiras moose in Wyoming. Just put in your time and reward yourself.

50 to 100% draw on preference draw, good access, decent bull potential. I want a good size bull. I have already killed one shiras, so I would want a good trophy. I just bought a point so It will be at 18 next year, but with point creep, I will be looking at the same units, likely.
