He Rob, I seen on some post that you were familiar with Kamas? Is that right? My son has hunted elk or deer there a few times the past 4 years but he has moved to Wyoming now with a new job and probably won't be able to come with me to scout or hunt..

I would appreciate anything to get me headed in the right direction Robb. Just having a starting place is a big help in a new unit.

Has anyone heard of any place called Christmas flat or Christmas lake on the Kamas?

Someone told me check that area?

Christmas Meadows not sure if that's the same place or if it's in your unit. Might be. Take the highway South out of Evanston Wyoming. Near Bear River service. Right off the highway. SSeen a ton of moose there. Rutnbuck

Congrats Rick!
I think what Homer meant was where you been hiding as we dont see you posting on here much recently :D

Ever since the big mess that KTC got into on here, I have not posted much. He got drug thru a mess that he didn't deserve all because of me posting the video of his wife's goat hunt. He and I both decided to back out and not be a part of something that cost him a ton of money and ruined his hunting desire and opportunities. I still get on and see who is still hanging out on here, or see what kind of critters you guys may have been taking. Now
I am hoping to find someone with some knowledge of the area I drew in that would possibly help me out. I have helped a lot of people on here and have made some good friends...
It is just not the same after the mess I created and damage done to KTC.
Hope you can understand.

Wow, went up on the 19th of July scouting and really just trying to learn the area and hopefully seeing a swamp donkey or two...
All I seen were thousands of ignorant, inconsiderate people throwing their trash everywhere. I was totally disgusted and only stayed a couple of nights and went home early Saturday. I have never seen that many people recreating in one area in my life. But then again I am from down south, and the throngs of people apparently hang out up that way. Every campground was full on Thursday, and the trucks and campers never quit rolling up that Mirror Lake highway...I have no idea of where they ended up going cuz there wasn't anything open ANYWHERE up there. Drove around some of the roads and to some of the lakes and they were all covered with people. Needless to say, I never seen a wild animal that weekend. So now I am frustrated trying to decide to even keep the tag or not. I can't get out and hike anymore so it may just be a waste to keep the tag unless the moose move in and hang out in some of the meadows I found up there...
I was so amazed at the way they just dropped their trash where ever they were. I can't handle that kind of dis-respect to our beautiful mountains. Hopefully things change after August...
Any tips or ideas on what I should look at doing?

I feel for you. Waited so long and what you get is a sledge hammer style eye opener to how most ppl act. I really try to avoid being anywhere the "hoards" call home. I'd love to blame it on slc or California. But it's just humans in general. Roaches ain't got ##### on us!

Good luck mister! I hope you find the experience you are looking for.

arick,
Anywhere in the mountains close to roads seems to be a zoo right now. Everyone trying to beat the heat of the valley and yes they bring their urban mentality with them.
I tried scouting for moose early when I had a tag many moons ago and I found they were very hard to find in the summer. They are big and black and hate the sun, so despite their size, they can hide like mice.
By September they will became more visible for sure, and I'm confident they are still around. I'd bet they hate noisy trashy slobs more than you do!
I don't know the unit well enough to tell you where to look but I wouldn't give up just yet.
Hopefully someone who knows the Kamas better can chime in.

The place will be damn near empty of people mid-week during your hunt dates

It's just another Summer wknd now with all the tourist Rick.

Take a deep breath, it'll be lot's better come September.

I had that tag in 2009, killed a decent 45 inch wide bull. Don't just focus on water, river, and beaver ponds. I killed mine at the top of the mountain in sagebrush and quakes. Mirror lake highway, Shingle Creek, Smith-Morehouse. Saw my bull the first time in Shingle Creek, easy hike past lots of beaver ponds. Ask everybody you see if they have seen any moose, most people are excited to talk about it. If you're still hunting during the rifle elk season, get a tag! I could have killed 3 different bulls.

Be sure to take Barbie if she's still around. She's great at spotting deer, elk, and moose, not to mention a great companion. She doesn't cook much though. :)

Eelgrass, funny but I found Barbie down on my reloading bench the other night while rummaging thru some 300 RUM casings. Never thought about even taking her, but I better get her out in my trailer and take her along. May be good for the slow boring days! Haha.... lots of fun memories there.

RE: Moooose!

LAST EDITED ON Aug-12-19 AT 11:11PM (MST)[p]Deerelkalope, I haven't seen much area of sagebrush and quakes up in that unit yet, other than going into Norway Flats. Most everywhere I made it to was thick pines, I was so frustrated when I went up a few weeks ago, that I left to go home early. More people than trees. I haven't felt like going back until things quiet down. Guess I should take another trip up there before Labor Day weekend. Pretty sure that weekend will be a zoo too. As far as walking, my body has retired from much of that, but I am going to try to get in a few places I have seen. I have a couple people who are going to start watching and reporting if thery see animals. Kind of sounds like they can show up about anywhere. I am just going to be patient, and if it happens, great, but if not, that is ok also.

antlerrick, all of your past hunts are some of the best ever posted here. I wish you the best on your moose hunt.

Thanks Eel, I have been blessed to be a part of some awesome hunts, and been a part of taking some impressive animals.....but that was back a few years ago. My body seems to want me to fail on this hunt, but I am going to give it hell and try to make it happen one more! And the odds of that happening can only improve if I take Barbie along..
I have met some great friends on here and got to help a few of them. And I enjoyed it regardless of if we killed or not. It would make me proud to have one more "best ever" hunts on here.

Hey Rick,
On my hunt for Bullwinkle, the regional biologist suggested to me to cover lots of ground, rather than focusing on just a few drainages. I'm not much for " road hunting" but I followed his advice. I covered a good portion of my unit in my truck stopping and glassing when I could, and when the weather cooled off, I saw lots of moose.

Anyway, your lack of mobility may not be as much of a handicap as you might think.
It's still plenty hot so they won't be out much when the sun is up, but as was mentioned, when you do go, be real friendly and ask people who are out if they have seen bulls. People like to talk about seeing moose.

Keep us posted.

Antlerrick,
Hang in there man.
I will be on my once in a lifetime moose hunt up in my home state of WA this fall starting first of October. I will be praying you have a good time and successful hunt.

Good luck to you!
I am hoping that once the mass of people leave and the weather cools down a little, that maybe one will show up. I have thought hard about turning the tag back, but I probably have as good of a chance to find one now as wait another year or two.
I am going to run up this weekend and learn a little more of the unit hoping to find some good areas to watch...
Either way, it has to be better than working, huh?

Hey Littlebighorn... Do you recall the biologists name, and possibly have his phone number? I would like to talk to someone who spends lots of time out there...
Thanks...

Sorry, I'm not much help with that Rick,
My Moose hunt was in Wyoming 24 years ago, but I'm sure you could contact the UDWR for the current biologist's name. It's a worth while call to get all the info you can. I think your unit is in the Northern Region so I'd try just calling their office. My son used to work in that Region, but biologists sometimes change from year to year. I'll see if some of his contacts might have some info.

That's fine... appreciate the thought.
I am heading back up tonight and hoping that all the hoards of people are gone. I am sure there will be a lot of archery hunters, and they have the right to be there...and they would probably share info if they have seen any donkeys....
Still just trying to learn more of the unit. Anyone who has been up there know where the best Sage/Aspen ares are. The biggest share of my travels have only seen the pine forests...Just trying to widen my knowledge of the unit...
3 weeks and counting.... The rifle is ready, now I just have to find something for it to eat! haha.....
Mr Allard keeps posting pics of monster moose he is photographing, so he keeps me going.... Only most of his are in Colorado....
Have a great weekend all!

Another great weekend and no donkeys... I did get to see some more new country. Still lots of people but didn't seem to be the city yupee's. I think most of them were hunters. One more big weekend and maybe things will settle down up there... Hard to scout a unit like that without anywhere to glass and scope from...

Looks like a little snow up there this morning... That can't hurt at all.. If nothing else, it will keep the yuppie wanna be campers home.... maybe we won't have to fight traffic and people to find a camp spot...
and it may push the animals down!!!
4 days and counting!

: Moooose!

We will be camping somewhere between 6-8 miles above Kamas on the Mirror lake highway. We will be there for at least the first 9 da?s and then be back depending on time availability. Hopefully this little snow up there this morning will push them out and keep the wanna be yuppies home.
I definately don't have enough help, but my son and I took care of his ourselves. I don't think you can have too much help on a moose!
