I was going to post in the campfire but, I figured there would find a few more opinions here. We recently had to put down our 15 y/o lab and are looking at getting a new pup. I have it narrowed down to a Plott or Catahoula. The dog will be a family dog first and foremost. My youngest boy is 2. It would also need to be good with other dogs and the various livestock we own. Pigs, sheep, goats, cattle, etc. From what i've read and heard, I am strongly leaning toward a Plott. What are the pro's and con's with these dogs in relation to my situation? The dog will be trained to track blood trails and pigs as well.

My Plott just had a litter of pups 2 weeks ago. She was bread with a mountain cur hound. I have a couple of pups left if you are interested.

Don't have too much experience with a Catahoula I run mixed hounds but I bet both those dogs would fit the bill for you. If i had to guess though, it might be a little easier with the Catahoula based on what you would like to work the dog with. I guess it all just boils down to how much time you have to work with the dog. My dogs like to run to catch, not sure if they would be all that interested in blood trailing but I've also never tried. Good luck with your new pup either way!

Damn! I'll be driving through Ely tomorrow, on my way to Colorado. Too bad they aren't ready now. I'd definitely take one.

I appreciate the suggestions. I have looked at Drahtaars and GWP's. One of my top requirements is a single coated dog. We have a couple ponds and a lot fox tails on our property. Our dogs swim a lot and our lab always stunk even after a thorough bathing. She also shed like crazy. I'm hoping o get away from those characteristics.
