Tang safety M77 re-barrel?

I’m thinking about re-barreling a 1986 era Ruger tang safety 30.06. It’s my backup elk rifle and it’s got a bit of rust near the muzzle. Obviously it’s never going to be a bench rifle so I’d like to keep it cheap. Perhaps I should just get rid of it and start over. Opinions?

look up Remage barrels Beaner.....I think they make them for Rugers.....it is a barrel nut style replacement that you can install yourself....

new barrel installed for under $350

You could probably have JES rebore it also. 35whelen or 338-06. Cheaper than a rebarrel and pretty quick turn around. Give them a call.

About $250 for a rebore is what I’ve seen JES normally charges. I think that’s a 3 groove but I think they do 4 and 5 also.

I'd rebarrel but re-bore is also a great option.
NO Mr Bean... don't get rid of an old tang safety 77!

I've got 2 -M 77 tang safety Rugers years 1968 in a .243 & a 1972 in a .284, both have muzzle breaks & on 2 nd barrels from shooting a lot, especially the .243 on varmints of all types. Both are never for sale & I have utmost confidence in both. The .243 has a Serial number 117. One of the firsts made. Stake my life on either rifle. But especially the .243, it's taken 3- All Time B/C antelope bucks. All one shot/one kill. Yes- I'm a Ruger M- 77 fan to say the least. Both have a Harris Bipods too. ? Jerry Gold ?

My dad had a tang safety M77 25-06 that he shot for years, I’m sure 3000+ rounds through it. It started to be less and less accurate so he had it rebarreled to a 338-06 AI. Now it’s real accurate. He bought 500 pcs of A-Square 338-06 stamped brass instead of sizing 06 brass. The only thing I don’t like is the trigger. It’s fine for a sporter, it has a trigger shoe that makes you thing it’s a lighter one, but isn’t like the customs in other rifles I have. I think that goes for all Rugers, triggers are hard to improve.

I have Trigger Shoes on both & had them set at 1 1/2 lbs plus I had installed on both the extra strong fast spring in the bolt, I believe the man who did it was /is named David -- don't recall his last name-- was doing that for lots of years. He was a Shooting Champion, wow did that make a difference in super fast lock time !! As you can tell, I like the M- 77's & everything about them. You are correct-- the trigger pull is a problem quite often, I think the factory setting was 3 1/2 lbs, way too heavy for my liking anyway.
That was many years ago getting those triggers & lock times set better. They are both precision killers & sniper types for me & that .243 is still a tack driver & is my go to rifle on varmints & deer & antelope. Anything bigger I go to the .284 & 140 gr Noslers. ? Jerry Gold. ?

I have two tang 77's. One in .243 and the other in .270. Kids have piled up critters with them. Great rifles. mtmuley

I love Ruger too. I only had one bad rifle from them. I bought a modern 77 with the bolt safety because that’s what you could get new. I got it in 25-06 because we still had loads of new brass and bullets and equipment. I got it with the idea I was going to experiment with it. Experiment like keeping good records on it and have it accurized with a better trigger, free float, and crown and whatever I could do to it. It was never going to be a big game rifle for me, maybe another Varmint. I bought a Timney and tried the install myself but couldn’t get it right. I took it to a gunsmith and he got it kind of right but not to my liking and accuracy was average. Long story short, I sold it which is something I never do with a rifle. I’ve been around a few tang safety’s and they’re the only way to go.

I had a tang safety 77 in .300 win.

Good gun and was pretty accurate. I made the mistake of trading it for a rebarrel job on my 700 rem. 300wby. by a guy who worked at Pac Nor. Got a great gun out of the deal but still wish I had the Ruger too.... didnt save enough to be worth it in hindsight.

They super stoked to get the gun. Should have been my sign.
