Hammer Bullets

Has anyone tried these? I bought a few to try in my 28 Nosler. I'm wondering about performance on big game and especially on elk. I'm going to try them on some Texas hogs this spring.

Haven't shot any game with them but I loaded some 98 gr Slegdhammers in my .257 Weatherby Mark V. 5/8" groups. Recovered a few and the front flattens to a blunt face a little bigger than the diameter of the bullet. Actually resembles a hammer.Just make sure your barrel has enough twist to stabilize the size you are looking for. Being a copper bullet they are very long.

I have never heard a complaint.....mtmuley will probably respond, I think he uses them alot...

LAST EDITED ON Nov-20-19 AT 10:44PM (MST)[p]Lots of guys on Hunt Talk using them this year also. Very accurate bullets. Great choice for a mono bullet.
What bullet did you go with?

They don't have the sexy BC's of some bullets. Shoot critters long enough and you'll realize that's not a big deal. Best thing is, Steve will pick up the phone if you call. Terminal ballistics are what the guys at Hammer are concerned with. They just got back from a long elk hunt in Montana. Call him. mtmuley

Just loaded some 227 grains for my 300 Norma. 86 grains of Norma 217 and they are tumbling. They all chrono’d at 3050 average FPS on a 5 shot string. 230 grain Berger’s were at 2900ish with the same powder and charge.
I’ve never had that happen in any of my guns before.
Gonna call them and see if they have some solutions. I was really excited about these so I hope I can figure out a good load.

That's strange. They must be slightly undersized diameter? Or your rifling is worn or twist to slow? Let us know what you find.

I can’t remember the twist...I don’t know if I’ve got it on my build paperwork. The rifling isn’t worn out, the gun only has 50ish rounds down the tube.
I sent Hammer an email. If I can’t get them to shoot out of this gun, I’ve got some for my 28 Nosler and 6.5 prc. Both barrelsdef have the twist rate for the hammers.

Ive heard to many good things about those bullets to not give them a fair shake. If you dont have enough twist there are a couple things you can do that has worked for us.
#1 is set at the second node out on jump. The further from the land seems to help stabilize. #2 slow it down to secong node on powder charge..
We got a 180 Berger to fly awesome in a 9.50 twist on a 284 stw doint this.

For that bullet to impact sideways, there is no way it is stable. Hammer recommends 1:8 for that particular bullet. HorseCreek, send me the twist of tour rifle and velocity of the load. Steve is a close personal bud. I'll call him today to speed things up for you. mtmuley

muley, will you ask Steve what the ideal twist would be for his .277 168gr hammer hunters?
That would be a sweet bullet for a 270wsm with a long action...
Thanks

1:7 for the 168. Drop to the 156 and a 1:8 will work. He has told me in the past he is most comfortable with a stability factor of 1.5. If you load a 270WSM, check out RL-26. It's a pain to find, but showing great promise in lots of cartridges. I just found some and am hoping for 3200 plus with a 196 HH in my RUM. Should be easy. mtmuley

I’ve been loading H1000, Berger 140’s with good results .... I’ll look for some RL-26 and give it a try...

in the near future I’m building a 270wsm based off heavier Bullets and that 168HH looks awesome!

Yeah that 168 is sexy. Should be pretty nasty pushed fast. I really want to shoot the 199, but will have to wait until I rebarrel to a 9 twist. Steve cut the 196's specifically to work in a 10 for me and some other guys that like a heavier bullet. There's a lot of Hammer info on Longrangehunting you can check out. I'd post some links for you but I got banned. If you have some time, give Steve a call with any questions. mtmuley

Banned from LRH? What the heck for?

I believe I'm a 9 twist...Steve emailed me today and is gonna send out a new box of 214's on Monday. Hows that for service! Since They are such a long bullet he said they need at least a 1-8 and some elevation to get them tho shoot. BTW these were shot in Arizona so basically sea level.
Gonna start some load development this week on my 28 Nosler and 6.5 PRC with some Hammers as well.

Good deal. Doesn't surprise me he came through like that. I've known him for 40 years. Good guy, good bullets. mtmuley

If you have the correct twist Hammers are great. My son took a buck last season with the 124 grain bullet in my 6.5 WSM at 3200 FPS. Picture perfect bullet performance. I'm currently working on a load for the 199's in my 9 twist 300 Norma.

Steve is a great guy that stands behind his products, if you're not satisfied he'll make it right .
