Los Padres National Forest

With turkey season winding to an end and most guys having bagged at least one bird (hopefully); I thought I’d see if anyone faired well hunting Los Padres NF. Due to this COVID pandemic, I’ve been on a restricted travel radius (military order) and haven’t been able to get up North (located in San Diego) to hunt the more populated bird areas. Just want to hear stories and see pictures of what I may have missed out on! Also, additional conversation piece here; Fort Hunter Liggett is not conducting a separate military drawing for deer and elk tags this year so I’m curious to see if those tags were put back into the available tags for the state. The odds may be better for some this year! Also also, do any of you think Camp Roberts will be open for deer or elk ever again?

It’s hard telling honestly. The base tends to change the seasons on the hunts and I’ve heard of them cancelling the hunts before but I’ve never heard of them not conducting the draw. The garrison commander may not want to deal with the PR nightmare if this pandemic should interfere with the scheduled hunts. The elk hunt takes place late July to early August so they may be projecting that this social distancing and stay-at-home order may interfere. The base is currently open to hunting so it doesn’t really make sense but that’s the best I can reason.

I live in Los Padres Mt Pinos District. I've never seen a turkey here, however, I am told that they were once in the area, but the "Day Fire' decimated them. Maybe out towards Santa Barbara? I'm heading up North to try next week.

A while back we wrote about the LP, but it sounds like you never got to check it out. I haven't hunted it in a long time, but when I did it was up near Big Sur. As for turkeys generally, there seem to have been a lot of two year-old birds in my area further north, although locating public lands with good numbers is difficult. That said, a guy only needs three...

That’s a fact. I didn’t get a chance to check it out. I want to learn the area because I’m a big fan of Fort Hunter Liggett but I want to take trips and hunt more than two days at a time because it’s about a 300 mile drive for me. Los Padres seemed like suitable habitat but I wasn’t sure of the bird density

Sorry...I was kidding. I meant inside the park. :) Look into the Huasna area for public land and I am sure you can find some turkeys.
