Antlerless draw odds for 2020

It is depressing when I think about the chances of my 6 year old drawing tags once he can start hunting big game. I read through these odds and it’s absolutely a downer.

I read these national news stories that talk about hunting being a dying sport and something that will be lost forever if we dont get the new generations out hunting, but stats don’t lie.

While hunter numbers may be decreasing nation wide, hunter numbers are sky rocketing in the western United States, with a big surge in Utah. Hunting won’t die around here for a long time if this kinda stuff keeps happening. I honestly hope a lot of kids and new people interested in it do drop out. We don’t need more hunters. We have enough. The parents will get the right people involved who actually love hunting for what it is, and not a flex factor on social media. I think many kids start hunting these days only because it’s ‘cool’.

with that said, the draw odds can be discouraging as a whole, but if you take a closer look, there’s still piles of opportunities for youth to go hunting. If you aren’t hunting every weekend from August until the end of January, that’s your own fault. There’s youth archery deer tags OTC, that are available AFTER the youth general draw were 20% of the tags are allocated to them. They might not draw every year, but they can draw every other year pretty easily. The years they don’t draw, they can go road hunt 2 points with a bow. There’s 3 season spike elk tags, there’s youth upland pheasant hunts, youth waterfowl hunts, regular waterfowl hunts, youth turkey hunts, antlerless tags that can be drawn with 0-1 points... the opportunities are endless. It’s the parents responsibility to figure out how to get their kids out there. The opportunity is there, take advantage of it.

I have the opposite view. We need more hunters. If not hunting won’t be allowed for long. Love to see so many wanting to get out and enjoy a hunt and get some tasty meat. Trophy hunting will never when over any non hunter public support. Antlerless hunts are some of my favorite. Taking my 76 year old father-in-law on a cow hunt this year. Likely his last elk hunt after a stroke and age have caught up to him. He has probably thanked me 10 times already and the hunt is still months away.

That’s awesome, have fun on your hunt with him. I hope people do the same for me when I’m that age.
