Fraudulent Hunt

On a series note.....but related.....

Anyone hear of any PETA and/or left wing groups applying for tags and just sitting on them? A meat processor in Wyoming was telling us about it. Seemed far fetched but after this election nothing would really surprise me.

For the past few years we have been hearing rumors of animal rights people purchasing hunting tags in CA. and sitting on the tag to prevent one less animal being hunted and killed.

Heard of that happening for Swan tags a few years back.

We saw the "animal rights" groups do that in Arizona years ago. Then Az started requiring full payment for the tag up front, squashed a lot of that. This was years ago, before online applications were a thing, like '85-'86 or so.

heard of this in California the last couple of years. They took the hunters safety course and just buy tags to keep hunter from getting them

Tags???? , what are tags for??? Private land just shoot it and get it into the cooler, garage, or out of sight no tags or licence needed. Some use the 2 S RULE ( shoot & shut up)

Colorado got rid of fronting the tage money and our applicants tripled! But they had to buy a small game license.

This happens in Virginia lottery hunts.

It might mess up the odds a little but in the end it would actually be a win in many ways, that’s a lot more money to wildlife departments. I can’t imagine that it is actually a major thing though, the number of individual applicants it would take to apply for even half or a quarter of the various tags would need to be in the thousands in each state to make any noticeable difference.

Yes except it keeps maybe you from hunting as you can't get a tag because they are sold out...

It probably depends on the state and the hunt. If there are limited OTC tags, then yeah, a relatively small number of people could mess things up (like 500). In a draw state with a points system, 500 PETA warriors could apply but they would need to put in for like 4-5 years to even get a tag in some of the units. Spread that out over a state, over several years and it would not even be noticeable. In my state, it would take like 10,000 people applying for it to even make a dent. And spread those 10,000 over the 100 or so units and you are adding 100 people per unit to the average 1000 people that apply in every unit already, 10,000 fake hunters might add 1 year to a normal person's wait time. But it would add around $2,000,000 to the DFW's income.
At a 33% hunter success rate, only every third fake hunter would actually prevent an animal from being taken. It would be an incredibly inefficient way to "save" the animals.
I could see states with fewer hunts be much more affected by fake hunters but most of the states with more tags would take huge numbers of fakes to make any difference.
I'm sure this happens in places in limited numbers but I just doubt that it is having any significant impact on the average Joe.
