NR limits

Rebound to what 2016, 2012, 2000 numbers? What’s your baseline? Will we every not be”strugggggling”? We lost fawns it happens! It’s not like half the adult population was wiped out and the fish and game upped the antlerless tag the next year. They adjusted the next two year cycle. “Years to rebound “ how many? It’s been four, what are we waiting for?
Again the good old days, are gone we will never see the numbers, or quality of deer we had even 10 yrs, ago way to many factors that cannot be undone /changed or reversed ,to ever get numbers back to where they were
This is, why Im not selective, if it's, legal
Buck, doe, fawn fork horn spike 2 point 3 point mature deer/elk doesn't matter if I hold a, tag for it I'm gonna, kill it,, and it doesn't matter to me if it's in my home state of montana, or as a non resident in another state

It seems to me the best way to reduce the crowding while still offering opportunity is to require all hunters to choose a weapon and only hunt those dates. Would reduce hunters during all seasons and give each hunter a better opportunity with the weapon they prefer. This seems so obvious that I'm sure IDFG explored this option and must see something I don't. I don't see the current changes that are being made changing the overall experience, especially with all the people moving to Idaho these days.

I think the issue with this is the same as any issue that would affect the residents.....

The residents will have to give something, someday, but will scream and kick every time its brought up. Someday the dept. will have to manage game and not play politics and cater to the opportunity hunters.

I do not blame the residents in any way. I hate lost opportunity in my state as well. But I am honest enough to see the need and would back changes in my home state. I guess Idaho residents just aren't there yet.

I've seen this happen in several states and I don't mind that they are going to reduce the number of non resident tags. I will still buy mine and compete just like everyone else. The only bad thing is that here in the next few years they will have to come up with the hard truth that the sales of tags will also fund the Game Wardens along with several other key components that will be affected adversely and thus making them have to make up the money loss that isn't being generated now and that means that resident tags will increase and then they will sell their souls and go to a point scheme which will raise the revenues for fish and wildlife and they will limit numbers across the boards to both residents and non residents. Its a catch 22 but mostly about the money flow for fish and game which is sad and unfortunate that the wildlife is the ones taking the loss in this game. Not to mention the future hunting generations that will be affected.

I don’t see this change effecting revenue at all. The deer and elk tags will sell out again in 2021 just like they have the past few years and probably faster since now there’s more of a supply and demand issue with the limited tags per unit.

They will not sell out . Many of these units are not great mule deer habitat.
This will also not help with hunter congestion, only with non-resident hunters.
The fact that the IF&G has left the second tag purchase available on Aug. first should be a clue.
How many new resident hunters have started hunting the state in the last decade? Many of these "new" residents did not move to Idaho for the surfing.

They may not sell out tomorrow, but they will be before they are open up for a second tag.

And that’s fine! They don’t live here or pay the taxes here! All game belongs to the residents of any given state!
Matt
The belong to you should you have a tag and are lucky enough to fill one, that's all. Lot's of residents live there and don't pay a lick in tax's - non-residents pay their way with the high tag and license fee's - pretty straight forward Matt.

Customweld,

I still doubt the logic. Early dates to purchase, increased fees for all tags and hunting licenses, and much less opportunity=fewer tag sales to non-residents.
There will be leftover outfitter tags like every year and with unit specific tags that may be hard to sell to a resident for a non-resident price.
Also I am wondering how many will be turned in for a refund once hunters are able to get results from other states.
I do enjoy you posts as most are exactly as I have witnessed in Idaho. The IF&G could have eliminated the second deer tag but chose not to if worried about hunter congestion. Hmmm

I think I have read all of the posts above and have not seen mentioned, but some units are forked horn only and I doubt NR hunters will buy a tag for that only. I'm sure some have filled tags there after hunting for a better buck in a unit that allows it then moved to a forked horn only unit to fill the tag.

I was wondering how the leftover outfitter tags will work, they must be unit specific too, no? That could make some tags hard to sell as well if they are specific to units in the Frank for example where many do it yourself hunters find the logistics of a venture there prohibitive.

I think they won't sell out. Not based on price but on the points above as well as others made by cabuck and others.

That is an absolutely beautiful buck cabuck!! I’m really just basing that forecast on this past year. For some reason there was a run on tags and something tells me that there is a pent up desire for a lot of folks to get out next year. This is a new season setting year, so it remains to be seen what is going to happen resident wise.
I don’t like to bag on NR hunters, they are after the same thing we are. Most have a love for the sport and a passion for the animals. I tend to get defensive when folks complain about Idaho and how things should/could be. What a lot of people don’t understand ( and this goes for a lot of residents) is how closely the commission works with legislators. A good portion of legislators are large landowners,so you know that that back is going to scratched first. All budgets go through the conservation committee at the statehouse , who are in my opinion, a bit hostile towards sportsmen. They get their marching orders from Idaho Farm Bureau. Idaho sportsmen have been supportive of price increases for residents. After a long fight with the legislators wanting to add a bunch of riders (auction tags, lap tags etc) IFG dropped the last big price increase.

If the F&G would have released the leftover elk tags from the Outfitters pool before August 1st like they did with the deer permits they would have sold out last year. Not sure why they did one and not the other? Either way the leftover elk tags sold out in 20 minutes! Yeah maybe some obscure whitetail tags and two point only tags will make it past August 1st? They will sell eventually. 550$ for liscence and deer tag, guys will buy that as a back up plan in December. A lot of those tag are going to be on hold in Outfitters pool, it will be interesting to see how they handle that. Money is not an issue. Hunting and fishing liscence are up because of covid and that will probably still be a factor next year

I'm not sure there is an outfitter pool of tags anymore with the new limits. I've heard of a few outfitters calling around last week to determine whether booked clients are resident or not, as the nonres hunters now have to purchase their tag this morning.

If that's indeed the case, it seems like the Idaho outfitters are really going to struggle in the future.

It was in the Lewiston proposal. My brother in Fairbanks is online now, sounds like its crashing!

Still plenty of tags for sale, but its been less than 24 hrs.
Most of the better units are already sold out.
Surprised to see so many marginal elk units sold out or very close too
Everyone in our hunting group was able to get their tags in the units that they wanted, not all the same though.
May opt for the trophy species controlled hunt this year, try for sheep
