Slim Odds at the expo!

Odds are $fw will keep that $3.75 to cover there costs for the expo.

Odds are even better that Antelope Island will raise their fees after all that saving $fw did if the Island

Odds are there are fewer deer than when $fw saved them

Odds are hunters have less of a voice tnow than they did when $fw started giving them a voice

Looks like the odds are pretty good for $fw bank account and pretty chitty for everything they were going to do.

So yup, odds are your getting screwed

Well being as the local economy shut them down and wouldn't let them do a expo this was about the only option they had. Things might be back to normal next year.

Ill take that bet.

$fw stands to collect a windfall.

There is very little chance in person validation will return.

The expo IS NOT ABOUT THE LOCAL ECONOMY. It never was, never.

Supposedly it was about raising money to support "conservation".

Im sure there will be another billboard sized check, with a little bump presented. To push "we raised more" by allowing online.

Mark it down.

Kinda hard to plan a expo and dump a ton of money into planning it if the state/city wont guarantee you they will let you hold it when the time comes.

And im pretty sure the validation in person rule is set by the dwr, they did away with it this year due to the circumstances. It was a one year deal.

You must be involved with $.f.w.?congrats on the 2 tags how much have they cost you? Don't say $5 give us a total of what you have spent on the con show total!

I dont put in for the super tags bud. I buy a buck and bull tag at maverick and have done very well for myself!

We will see.

I notice they didnt offer to refund a portion of the $3.75 that "covers their expense" when they didnt have the expense.

You know, this one year?

Yes we will see, but I'm sure if I'm right you will have something else to gripe about.

Im not a super sfw groupie i call the balls and the strikes according to what I feel is right/wrong. For instance I dont think they should have gotten the contact for the expo tags, but i dont really blame them for that, that falls on the state in my opinion. And i feel they should give the whole $5 back to the state.

But this is also not their fault, dont let your hatred for the group cloud your judgment on the issue.

I didnt claim it was there fault that group restrictions are in place.

I did say the local economy has nothing to do with the expo.

Also, the supposed reason for the $3.75 OS to cover costs.

Doesnt seem to big of an ask to return that to tge state to further " conservation" since their costs arent there.

They wont. They will pocket it. And tgey will lobby the state to do away with in person validation after they see the massive amount of money that comes in by not having validation .

The show will return, but the show isn't a money maker for $fw. The fees are.

If im wrong, call me out next year, ill admit it

I'm with hossblur i said it a bunch they will get rid of in person validation after they see how much they rake in this year. Yes they will still have an expo but they will allow non in person validations from here on out. After this year and SFW sees all the money they will make they will have a special meeting with the DWR and tell them that they shouldn't keep "average joes" who can't make the expo from applying and helping the herds.

I agree that odds will be worse this year without the in-person validation. But, how many people go to the expo and pay the $15 or $25 to go in because they have to do in-person validation?
During a normal year where they have the show would the additional money made on application fees cover the money lost because you didn't pay to go in the show hall?

I never went in...no need all the narcissists post on social media to see their mounts for free lmao.

I wish that they would make all the once in a lifetime tags for Utah residents only,Keep the game in the state res pool only:rolleyes:

They seem pretty insistent that the in person validation will be in place after this year.

Has their always been a requirement for NR‘s to have a current hunting license to apply?

If not, the $72 might provide somewhat of a barrier to entry on the NR side for those NR that don’t religiously apply in UT every year...

If the goal is to raise as much money as possible for the benefit of wildlife it will likely make sense long term to permanently eliminate the in person validation. If it results in selling more licenses the state gains the revenue from the licenses and the extra PR tax revenue. If you really care about raising additional revenue for wildlife I do not know how you could support going back to in person validation unless revenue somehow drops this year - very unlikely. I am not saying SFW uses the money wisely or does not. Keep it 100% virtual - lowers your costs, expands your audience, and increases revenues maybe I am missing something (local businesses, vendors, etc. I get that but those should be at best secondary considerations). Imagine the good that could be done if this were done with the single mission of benefitting wildlife. I have never bought a lottery ticket and have only gambled in a casino one time - I donated some money to SFW with the chance to draw a tag for the first time and will do it again next year unless I have to validate in person - just not practical for me to do. I hope to be the first person from Iowa to ever draw one of these tags (I have never noted anyone from Iowa on the list - but someone may have).

If they don't go back to in person validation then there is no point in ponying up the 200 tags, Utah is the only one with skin in the game, no other western state is giving tags for this show.

They got the tags on the stipulation they would keep the expo in Utah, and that it would be an in person validation. one of the main points for the state to give the tags was to have a large event in SLC every year as a boon to the local economy. Obviously that was not possible this year with a world wide pandemic effecting the entire globe.

The in person validation is a lot bigger thing than a lot of you realize. The whole event was prefaced with it in mind. Take away in person validation, and you will not have the tags in the future.

In person validation is not going away permanently.

I’m not a UT resident but that’s what I remember too. Tags were predicated on having the large expo in SLC.

If solely done to generate the maximum amount of money for wildlife conservation, they would make the most money by simply putting them all up for auction to the highest bidder...

Keep all the money raised in Utah for projects - I always assumed that is where it stayed mostly anyway? If the goal is to maximize the benefit of the tags/increase revenue for wildlife it is a really easy decision if in fact this way raises more revenue as predicted.

Aren't some SFW members on the wildlife board? Didn't SFW have enough pull with the DWR to get the last contract over RMEF?
Its not up to the wildlife board, the wildlife board didn't give them the contract the state did, And all that revenue for the local economy looks a lot more appealing to the governor and his lackeys' then a few extra dollars going to SFW.

Oh, and RMEF should have gotten the contract, the State F'ed that up in my opinion, I'm not an SFW sympathizer I call balls and strikes. But in the end this is not an SFW issue its the states call, and they are not going away from in person validation if they don't have too.

Like I said the whole Expo was predicated on those tags, and the only way they get the tags was to agree to in person validation.

All the money does stay in Utah.

I bet it will not be as big a jump in revenue as everyone is expecting, lots of people do not realize they still have to purchase a small game license at $85 for non residents on top of what ever hunts they choose to put in for, that's going to add up pretty quick.

yeah, if it was $5-$30 to put in for a few hunts then alot would, but now your looking at $90-125 for pretty far fetched odds. I do not see a big jump in applicants coming.

I would bet it’s going to be a big increase. People can’t pass up putting in for raffles etc but time wil tell for sure. I’m able to use my hunting license I purchased last year at the expo to apply this year. I’m only putting in for the 4 sheep tags so that’s 20 dollars I’m in for this year. Not bad at all.

I’m a little disappointed they got rid of the non res only tags. Does anyone know if they changed which tags were going to be raffled due to not having an in person expo?

I think it’s safe to assume that your horrible odds before in years past will be horrendous this year. Good luck with that! I’ll save what funds I would have spent and apply them to out of state opportunities. Enjoy your virtual expo ?

Your odds were always terrible they just became more terrible. That being said, i did apply a for multiple tags.
I am ready for the EXPO to be back live, us Utah residents will be ready and it’s good for our wives! After all, the only other time many of them are able to get loose is in Wendover on opening weekend of deer season, and that’s a long time from now!

JakeH, it actually is the wildlife board that makes the call on the tags and who gets the expo contract. A recommendation is made by the DWR, but the decisions all fall to the board. The final decision on it is a wildlife board vote. But you are correct this is a call for the state, and not SFW’s. It just so happens that the wildlife board is the representative of the state on this one.

These are NOT sfw’s tags, despite how they might act.

These Expo tags are silly. When you spend $5 to buy a 1 in 10,000 chance at a Henry mountains mule deer, the odds are so ridiculous. Sure someone wins the lottery every year too, but financially it is a very poor investment. You are much better off investing that money and growing it to one day out to use on hunts and gear.

Unless you win!

I bet you're a millionaire with financial advice like that. Wait I just looked at your profile, you bought the henry mountains tag auction tag! ??

They say the lottery is a tax on the foolish. It Is also stupid to sit and put your quarters in slot machines, but people do that too because “someone wins.” But I’ve heard just one person explain to me a rational view of gambling: He said “Look I know that the house always wins and I will lose money. But I don’t care because I have a good time.” So if you have a good time buying expo tags, then it is money well spent. Just don’t expect to win, whether or not they require in person validation. By the way I’m in favor of these expos because they find conservation.
