Gunnison Basin Outfitters

I’m looking for a recommendation for a trophy mule deer outfitter in the Gunnison Basin. I have decided to burn my points and hunt. The area I had started accumulating points for, is a shell of what it once was! Any info would be great!

One good place to start your search is : Colorado Outfitters Association. They have an easy site to navigate. Be sure and do a good job on your research there are some really crooked outfitters with very good web sites.

Steve Guerrieri at Lazy F Bar Outfitters. Look him up on Instagram. He employs a great bunch of guides and they really know the Basin.

I would second that. I'm sitting on a pile of points too and from my years of research Steve is the only one I've talked to that seemed like a reliable choice. not that there are many other options.

I elk hunted with Steve several years ago. I'd recommend him as well. He is in Crested Butte. I think several of the guys guiding for him are still there.
Don't know how it would be for mule deer, but he was able to cater the elk hunt to the hunters physical fitness. I was running marathons at the time, and we climbed and climbed quite a bit to get to where they had scouted a good elk. There were other guys in camp that were limited in how far they could go and he worked their hunts to their capabilities.

BTW Hntn, how many points are you sitting on?

Thanks for the recommendation, now if I could get ahold of him....tried email and calling! And as far as points, I have 21

What unit are looking at? I can personally guide you in 54. But if you’re looking at 55 or 66 I would highly recommend Lazy F bar.

Coloradoboy, I’m in the same boat and looking at basin units. 66 will take a bunch of points- too many IMO. I’m looking at 67,55,54. I heard 55 has been tough last few yrs as it was more affected by last winter kill than other units. Maybe I’m wrong. I’m looking at going guided. Want to get out of pta game. What’s your opinion on 55 vs 54 or 67. Feel free to PM

Always be careful of business that says they are the best. Good luck in your decision. I’ve only hunted one of those units so I’m no help comparing them.

I’m looking at doing a second season hunt w the date changes this yr in one of these units either 55 or 67? Any opinions on either. I’ve hunted elk in both of them so I’m fairly familiar w them just never for deer

Undeniably the best should have 5 star review?

Forum boss needs to cut him off.We don’t need people like that
We have lost too many guys with real knowledge
Because of people like this.
Thanks for your help.

No one is questioning Coloradoboy or his Wyoming elk.

I think you need to call me someone time and let’s hash this out. I don’t claim that to be perfect by any sense. I did some dumb chit 10 years ago as a 19 year old kid as a lot of us have. I’ll own up to it any day of week. I sleep just fine at night
Damn has it been 10 years? Time flies. Damn. Nothing to hash out, I enjoy your posts and willingness to help people.

I'm not Founder, but keep it above board gents. It'd be nice if someone posted about their successes, and guide feedback vs. this bullchit.
Sometimes the best thing is for two men to bury the hatchet and move on. I’ve learned over the years a man who admits his own faults is a lot more or a man then those who seeks faults in his fellow man.

Colorado boy made a mistake when he was younger. I was one of the ones that was critical of him. He apologized and accepted responsibility. Its time to move on from that and bury that ghost. He doesn't deserve to have it brought up every time someone doesn't agree with him. I think there is something written somewhere about forgiveness and walking in someone else's shoes.

Fun fact. Hes also the only person they let turn their Wyoming antelope tag back in when they “drew too many tags”. Long time ago, little over a year ????

Where is the hatchet going to be buried?? In someone's head or the ground ..Never understood that analogy????

All can say is if your my client, you’ll get my best no matter the unit.

I’m impressed with your outlook ! I’ve seen your photos & communications. I’m considering a try for a deer tag with 12 points- maybe just enough ? Unit- 67 th season , & you may not hunt that area which I understand. I’ve never hunted it. Please contact me when you can. Thanks !

Call me if would like! I own and operate an outfitting business in unit 55. This will be my fifth year of having it. I have other years of guiding before this in the unit with Lazy F Bar. They are top notch cant take that away from them. I would understand if you are already locked in with them. I have some spots available for fourth and experienced guides that know deer and the country really well. Check out my website. Also have facebook and instagram

I can vouch for Nick. He was my guide when I hunted with Lazy F Bar.

Hey Nick, haven't talked to you in a few years. Still remember my hunt with you guys. It's the only guided hunt I've taken and It ranks up there with the best of my hunts. Lots of good memories, especially when your horse got away and I had to chase it down for you! :) Oh wait, probably shouldn't have posted that as a compliment!!

Glad you're still in the business. I think I'm up to 8 CO points and you're at the top of the list when I get ready to cash them in.
