Region G method of transportation

This question is probably more toward the resident hunters that hunt region G. What do you guys use to hunt G every year? Horses and pack in or camp at trailheads and do day trips or do you back pack in walking or camp and do day trips with a pack on?
Opening weekend or later with less crowds?

Maybe I need to change this to anyone that has hunted G! I have hunted it 3 times, Twice on foot and the last time on foot and then actually got my buck using horses. This shouldn't be offensive to anyone just curious as to what works the best in that area for everyone.

Old fashion backpack and spot/stalk. No drones, airplanes, horses, long range rifles...back to the basics of outsmarting an old moss horn! How about you Buzz and SS?

Joined the hoards of hunters on opening day.

I’ve used boot leather and horses.

@jims what year was the last year you’ve hunted G for deer?

A while ago? Gobs of hunters then. I can’t imagine what it’s like now! How about you?

On foot for me. Hunting the middle ground between the guys on horses and the guys driving around hoping one runs across the road.

Why do you need those range-finding leica's if you never shoot long range?

Do you guys hunt that area only for deer or do you also include Elk on the general tag? Seems like a pretty tough pack out for Elk in that area.

Good idea. Pack out in Az can be tough but usually not that bad and compared to Western Wy it's a cake walk!

I have packed inn a couple times on foot. Horses would've been nice but they don't like me.
I've been bit, kicked...dam near decapitated! Bucked off and rolled on!
Nahh no horses for me!
Then again I've never had sex with one and according to Slightlysober its legal!

It's not a good sign that horses don't like you.

I have only hunted G once and that was with an outfitter. The outfitters use permanent camps near the road and trailer the horses to a trailhead every morning.

If you take horses in to stay overnight you are going to have to deal with the horses. When you get up high where the deer are there isn't much water.

Founder hunts G a lot and from his photos it appears he uses horses but I don't know in what manner he uses them.

You sure he hunts G?

"G" is a big region. Tons of roads. unit 143, 144, 145 is what you should be referring to not G. 135 is very accessible by vehicle.

I used "G" because that is the area everyone seems to relate too and the battles rage over resident versus non resident. I will hopefully be moving up to probably Pinedale next summer and I just wanted to get a feel on how most people hunt that area. It is beautiful country but hard on the body!

I've hunted it both on foot and on horse. I prefer horseback because of the terrain, but I also really like packing in on foot. On foot is a young mans game. Besides I like to have something to eat besides a mountain house! Definitely some of the most physically demanding country that there is.

The first 2 times I hunted it on foot and swore I was done with the area since it is so hard on your body but that country just keeps drawing me and alot of others back!

I’ve never hunted it but I have scouted it for a possible future hunt. I don’t see horses being that useful but maybe it was the area I was in. It seemed like water was pretty limited.

Goats would be a lot better option in that type of country imo. I also don’t think it’s that rugged compared to other high country areas I’ve hunted/scouted.

When I was young, we always camped at the end of the road and hiked in from there each day. That about killed us off after a day or two., When I got older, we started backpacking in and setting up a spike camp in likely areas. Now that I am 72, horses are starting to sound better all the time, except they are such a pain to take care of in the back country. However you get there, you have to get a long distance from the roads to find good bucks, and it is getting harder all the time even then.

Actually a lot of big bucks are taken close to the road. One outfitter even made a business of it. Jenkins hunting camp killed some absolute big bucks doing deer drives in the heavy timber near the roads...

I hunt on foot. I've noticed a tremendous increase in hunters using atvs/utvs. Taking them everywhere. Horses save a lot of wear and tear on a body. I've hunted with them, but they are a distraction. Rather walk and then go get a horse when it's time to pack.

You will love Pinedale!!!!

That's what I was thinking as far as the fishing. Didn't know about the sheds. Star Valley was my original choice but thought my wife would like Pinedale better.

Probably wont like it if you dont like the cold. It gets colder there then anywhere in the state most the time. Lakes were still froze when i was there last weekend

Definitely good to know! We are going to still have a house in Arizona so she can go warm up ! Any other area's you would suggest? I just want to stay in western Wy and not to far from Region G since I'm a Mule deer fanatic.

There is no place warm in Western Wyoming during Winter. It’s like your Phoenix heat, you just deal with it. The warmest part of the state is probably as low as you can find in elevation along the Platte River near Torrington but that’s a long drive from Region G. You should at least take a look at Evanston as it’s warmer than Lincoln or Sublette county, close to hospitals and decent shopping in SLC and the airport. It is also still semi-affordable.

Thank you. I have looked at most of the western towns trying to find the right combo of things to do. I actually live in Prescott Az which is a mile high. Usually our snow is 4-8 inches at a time and melts off within 2 days but in the last 3 years we have gotten 2 feet at once on 2 different occasions. I can handle the cold but my wife won't be quite as thrilled!
