Eastern guy. Looking for general info on 71. Weather, clothing gear. Got the gear and mind set. Drew first rifle. Not new to working hard. Any tips tricks much appreciated. Can pm. Or share info. Trade fishing trip on Great Lakes.

I have a cabin there and am currently hunting elk elsewhere. They are trying to rebuild the herd numbers in that area which means they dramatically cut back on cow tags but not on bull tags. We hunted first rifle last year and 3 of 4 of us could have killed a cow. Only 1 of us even saw a bull and he was not able to get a shot. Also, the dates are pretty late this year and that means very little if any rutting activity. However, that means a longer break between bow season and first rifle. Private land hunters always seem to do well but public is pretty tough at the moment.

The good news is that so far the high country is lush. And from what I saw, it’s a really good calf crop. Herd numbers are rising, there should be a fair amount of raghorns this year. In other words, shoot the first legal bull you see. Good luck

I was just up two weeks ago, cows were dropping calves but didn’t see nearly as many as years past. All were on private.

Thanks. My first trip out there. Hopefully I can luck into one. I’ll keep posted. Any and all information would be much appreciated.

If you've never elk hunted before my advice is the mountains/terrain is 100 times bigger in person than it looks on a map!
I’d agree. Been to the mountains before. Just never hunted them. One track of land I hunt is over 10k acres I know it doesn’t compare. But I’m used to bigger areas.

Check the peaks and saddles around lone cone

There’s elk all through the area. Hunt early, stay late. Sit water if warm.

It’s all about finding them and elk move around. Stay mobile

Around lone cone can get crowded and the saddles are liable to go over into unit 70 which your tag is not good for. So be sure where you are hunting if you hunt the cone area. Green roads are in 71. The area to north and east with orange roads is unit 70 and land to south and west is private. All public in 71 has the green border around it. A couple of camps in that area fills it up fast
