First of all, thanks to all who shared their condolences and kind words regarding the passing of my beautiful bride, wife, companion and best friend. Your thoughts and prayers have helped to ease the difficult days and given me hope for a bright future. Life is definitely not the same without her at my side, but I feel her spirit and influence all around me. And dang it – I can’t seem to talk or write about her without my eyes watering up. Sorry.

Kaibab 2021 – Well, I didn’t draw the archery tag I had hoped for, but that’s OK. Congrats to all who did draw a coveted Kaibab tag. I still plan to be there this for all the hunts. I’ve already been there twice this summer scouting. I’ll repeat the offer I’ve made in the past to those who may like a little extra help for their hunt, esp. to 1st time Kaibab hunters. I’m willing to help anyone who would like an extra set of eyes and little bit of Kaibab knowledge/experience. I’m not a guide or outfitter (and I don’t want to interfere with them), just a guy who likes to help. I’ve helped many Kaibab hunters in the past, some through phone calls, texts, e-mail, PMs – and many on-the-ground during the archery, early and late rifle hunts. My goal is to share my 50 yrs of Kaibab knowledge/experience with as many as I can - the years are passing by (I’m 69) and age/physical ability to starting to overcome desire and opportunity. The trails are longer and mtn’s steeper every year. Anyway, if you’re interested or know someone who may be, please contact me (PM preferable). BTW I’m already committed to help someone during the early rifle hunt.

I was scouting on the Kaibab July 8-10 – my observations: 1) bucks are still putting growth on antlers, although it seems antler growth has been slow – I’d say most bucks were 75% grown; 2) DRY, DRY, DRY most water sources I checked were dry or almost dry (even trick tanks and guzzlers), some of the most reliable water sources were dry, even ones that have always had water during the past 50 years; 3) saw a few trailcams, not as many as past years, but it’s still early – I expect cameras to show up in the coming weeks; 4) despite drought conditions, still good lupine growth and green-up in places; 5) didn’t see any fawns, but I’m sure they’re there – a lot of does were acting alert & defensive; 6) did sprinkle a little on July 9 – I think there’s been some good monsoon moisture the past few days – it will take a sustained, abundant monsoon to restore water sources, but bucks could still finish out their antler growth nicely if weather cooperates; 7) Did I see bucks? Yes…and that’s all I have to say about that (in the words of Forrest Gump).

I plan to return to scout in 2 weeks for 1-2 days, then return on Aug. 19 to prep for archery hunt (hopefully). Good luck to all and feel free to touch base with me. Thanks!

The Warm Springs area of the Kaibab received 2.53 inches of rain the last two days. A few more solid storms like that and those dirt tanks will fill up.

Bwht4x4, where can I find charts like you posted. I went to the WRCC website but could not find anything similar. Thx

Go to this link: https://raws.dri.edu/

Click on the area you want to look at. It'll then load the RAWS sites for that overall area. Click on the one you want and on the left side you can select a handful of different things. The graph in my post above came from the "Graph of Last 7 Days" link.

I also use the "Daily Summary" and "Monthly Summary" links regularly for the areas I plan on hunting. You can also create graphs for specific attributes and for specific timeframes under the "Time Series Graph" link. This is the Warm Springs graph for precipitation for the last year 366 days.

Good news! except for the damaged roads - this part of the Mangum burn area was some gnarly country and was ripe for some nasty flooding damage. Keep the rain coming.
Dan
It is very good of you to offer your help on the Kaibab hunts.
Thank You
I know you now have your hands full on the early rifle hunt. I’m certain you will fulfill your goals on this early hunt.
Hopefully someone with an archery tag or a late season hunt will contact you for some help.
Best wishes to you!

Very sorry to hear about the passing of your beautiful bride, I know that has to be tough.
My wife, Lisa and I are new to hunting the Kaibab region, we just got our first Antlered Deer Tag for area 7 this year and we are beyond thrilled.
We are actually planning to be up in that area on Saturday to do some scoping and looking around.
We are going into the Kendrick Park area, been told that area is pretty good for some bigger bucks.
If you are out and about we would love to meet you and talk a little about what we can expect.
Thanks a ton

Unit 7 is not the Kaibab its actually south of the big ditch. Unit 7 is night and day compared to the Kaibab. Kaibab is typically considered 12AE&W and 12B&12BW.

Ok, well I'm not really hunting for a trophy buck, but thanks. So what about the population as far as Mule deer? I see where 1035 tags were issued for the Oct-Nov Hunt. Based on what I see in the book, that seems like a pretty good number.
We have already scoped out an area North of the 66 off County Rd 76 that looks pretty promising.
Looking to scope out the area near Kendrick Park this coming weekend.

Am I reading this correctly that only 7 inches of rain has fallen in Warm Springs in the last 365 days? If so, WOW! I knew it was dry, but no idea it was that dry! But I live in TN, where avg rainfall is around 45-50 inches per year.

J2K,

I'm getting 11.3 inches of precip for the last 13 months at the Warm Springs RAWS.

Technically it is 7.43 if July isn't counted twice.

Bwht4x4 that link you sent above is amazing. Thanks man!!
No worries and glad it's helpful.

Technically July isn't counted twice. It's July 2020 and July 2021. If we want to get technical here's the full year, Aug 2020 to July 2021. A total of 9.96 inches of precip during that time period.
