Is Tyson Fury the best of all time?

I just watched the Fury/Whyte fight. Which fighter from the past could beat the Fury of today. It’s all hypothetical of course, but I can’t see any of the great fighters of the past being able to win against Fury, including Ali. Your thoughts…

I think he needs a few more big fights under his belt before I'd say much more. He is one tough SOB though and can take as much as he can dish out.

That wasn’t Tyson’s prime
When he met a guy that could box, he got beat. Twice. I know he was a badass. But, when he got threatened, it was over. He got scared and reacted that way. And it wasn't Holyfield's prime either. I remember telling all my buds that were Tyson fans that Holyfield would beat him. They laughed. mtmuley

Beginning of Tyson’s career was the best boxer you will ever see. After getting beat in Japan and spending 3 years ( I think) in prison he wasn’t the same. You can’t really judge any fighters whole career if your looking for an example of the best ever.

Ali wasn’t at the end of his carrier, Forman, Holyfield you name the fighter. It’s just too brief of a window. Most of these guys should hang it up after there 26 but don’t. Maybe an exception would be mayweather.

Put any fighter in history in front of a 22 year old mike Tyson and they wont be able to take the punch

I made that same statement before that fight. Didn’t see the r bite coming though. Holyfield was head butting him…

The suger ray/Duran no mas fight is still great one to go back and watch today. Don’t know why I thought if that, guess seeing suger ray in your response

I remember Hagler, Hearns, Sugar Ray, Pacquiao, Norton, Ali of course and others. All those guys were boxers. I don't think Tyson was a great "boxer". mtmuley
Technically speaking (sweet science) no, you’re correct. The guy was a force of nature and when you stepped in the ring with him it didn’t matter how scientific you wanted to get. His famous statement “everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face” came into play real quick

Holyfield weight was a natural cruiserweight
He had retired from boxing from a heart problem and was passed his prime.
NO EXCUSES

But, when the punch in the face didn't work, he got beat. He was not a great boxer. mtmuley

Tyson was a great boxer thanks to Cus D’Amato. Just look at the way Tyson always kept his hands up protecting his head and the way he countered. Great boxer!

Buster Douglas was a fluke and the beginning to the end of the Tyson era. Tyson was up all night drinking and doing Japanese hookers before that fight. He was in no condition to fight anybody.

Nope. No excuses? I’ve clarified a few times here what I believe was the best example of “best ever” and never said it was the Tyson/Holyfield era of his career. Take a breath bud

John Wayne’s nephew Tommy Morrison is underrated but go back over his career and you might change your mind.

I guess it comes down to the definition of “best ever” to me it’s any fighter at his absolute best in a ring with the same ( of course these are all hypothetical) and in that case I firmly believe no one walks out of a ring with mine Tyson

Sugar Ray Robinson is great to read about and watch some old videos. He was amazing and fought everyone of his day and fought all the time.

Tyson was a bulldog but Holyfield was the man! Finesse vs brawler. Holyfield’s son was a good running back at UGA a few years back.

I am a huge boxing fan, even boxed a little myself. Tyson Fury is the best ever IMO. Too skilled , too big, too tough, can take a punch and has turned into a knock out artist himself. I don't think Mike Tyson would stand a chance. He was not the same fighter after prison for sure, but still Fury would destroy him, I don't think it would even be close. It would be like when Mike Tyson fought Lennox Lewis (who was also way bigger than him), but more of a whoopin. I actually like Mike Tyson, but he would lose. Some one said Fury needs a few more tough fights. I would love to see him fight Joshua and Usyk, then retire.

It would be fun to watch Lenox Lewis in his prime fight fury and Larry Holmes in his prime would be a good match up and going way back Joe Frazier at his best would probably give fury something to think about...

Tyson was a BadAss for sure. He was a handful for anyone during his prime!

Tommy The Hitman Hearns was my favorite. He was ripped off in the two Sugar Ray loses! There was some iffy scoring on some fights in that era.

Agree about Hearns. You knew Don King was lurking in the shadows somewhere…

Don King ruined boxing for many. People finally figured out they weren't watching championship level boxing anymore. They were watching who the Don wanted them to watch and what he felt made him the best business margin. And when the margin wasn't enough it would often look as if rigging the matches wasn't enough and they just started flat out rigging fights.

At the same time the dynamics of the fights became less and less "unknown". Fights were becoming more and more predictable with fewer dramatic endings. Trainers and managers were all looking for maximum reach with a good jab strategy and that was about it. Matches became so predictable that they should have changed the sport's name from Boxing to Jabbing.

A combination of quality mismanagement, boredom, and predictability, lead to mixed martial arts rising.

You kids haven't even mentioned Rocky Marciano. :) I haven't heard of Fury so I can't comment. Mike Tyson had hate in his heart and destroyed them all in his prime. He was a boxer in his own unique style. Somewhat like Marciano, he used leverage to put power behind his punches.

Watch the video Tailchasers posted. It will explain where Marciano fits in.

Agreed, good post.

I just don't think Tyson was a great boxer. Not in the pure sense of the sport. Tough? Yep. Badass? Yep. A great boxer? Not really. Just my opinion. mtmuley

Easy to sit back now and say Tyson wasn't......

Dudes basically Budda anymore, and I'm glad he found peace and a life.

But fighting ain't about points. If it goes to the scorecard, it becomes political.

No one, has been feared like Tyson. Without a doubt, the scariest MF that has lived, until, Don King.

Prime Tyson with that speed, head movement and power, frightening.

We we in Vegas the first fight he had after prison(white dude).

The $$$ and celebrity that was coming through the airport, was nuts.

Pre prison, Tyson is the greatest ever

Neither is Fury. Probably the best “boxer” ever was Mayweather. Could not be hit. His defense was his offense. Was he the best fighter ever? Not in my opinion.
But the title of the thread says nothing about being the best boxer. The original question said of all the great fighters, not boxers. That would encompass boxing and brawling in my opinion.

We will never know who was the "best". mtmuley

Fury is absolutely a great boxer. His skill is unbelievable. Add to it, that he is a giant, can take a punch and is powerful. Unbeatable unless someone lands a lucky shot, even then recovers very quick and can be back up and win the fight. He never gets tired either, incredible stamina.

I'm a little surprised no one has mentioned Joe Louis. He used to be regarded as the greatest of all time until Ali said it so many times people started to believe he was the greatest.

We also used to get to watch a lot more fights. But at $70 to see Fury, it's not gonna happen in my house right now.

Best pure Boxer of all time in my opinion is Mayweather. I've been watching Boxing for over 45 years and boxed myself in Highschool and College. Not that, that means much. But the guy can't be hit and has only come close to losing 1 fight. Hell, he has only lost a hand full of rounds for that matter.

Just Wait Till 5 Minutes after the Fight & Somebody Will YouTube it!

When Tyson was trained by Kevin Rooney and still promoted by Cayton/Jacobs, he was a monster I wouldn't bet against. Once Don King entered the picture, the great downfall began.
