223 Bolt Action

Since I can't find any 22-250 ammo, I was thinking about a 223 (since ammo is readily available). There are a lot of Prairie Dogs that are getting a stay of execution.
But I want a bolt action and not an AR platform, doesn't seem like there are many options on the shelves. Any suggestions?

Depends on how much you want to spend. You could get a cheap Ruger American or Savage Axis if you aren’t wanting to spend a lot. Both are proven shooters, and should work great for prairie dogs.

Thanks, That gets me started, I went to Sportsman Warehouse today and they did not have any bolt actions in stock, weren't much help.

Just about everyone out there makes a 223 bolt. If I bought another one, it would be Cooper. My 223 bolt is a Remington 700. It’s my favorite rifle. I shot it 6 days straight so far in the calm mornings we’ve been having. If I could shoot it every day I would. Make sure you use Nammo Lapua Oy brass.

If you’re in Utah, or another state with a Scheels, go see what they have in stock. They should have a handful of options, and they’ll price match anyone else.

don't think I want to spend up to a Cooper for this one. I don't reload, what is the upside of Nammo Lapua brass?

Nammo Lapua Oy is a really good brand of brass. If you don’t want to spend a lot of money, Ruger, Savage, Tikka should be good. While not a bolt, you could consider a New England Handi rifle, the NEF handi. You could get those real cheap.

GradAGun has them in stock (Ruger American).
Easy to order and have it shipped to a local FFL dealer in your area ....if you cannot find something locally.

I just worked up a load for one (Ruger American) and painted the stock. Pretty impressive accuracy for a cheap rifle. It's for one of my buddies.

I use a Howa Mini and its even more awesome(r) because the fit and finish is better IMHO.

Lots of choices out there.

........Oh, and the Ruger American uses any and all AR-15 magazines from 5 rounds to 30 and beyond.

Stopped by the Feed Store (Big R) They had a HOWA $579. can't say I liked the Green Plastic Sock. I will run by Scheels tomorrow.

Ammo is there. 22-250 does seem to go fast but shelves starting to fill. A freind sent me this pic asking if I was looking. But last year I bought 400 rounds of the hornady before they starting capping how much you could buy

I have a HOWA in 300 mag, that thing is decades old. From what I understand the Japanese made the HOWA at one end of the factory and most of the Weatherby Vanguard at the other end. I have no complaints with that HOWA.

When Walmart put them on a sale out. I picked all 25 boxes 22-250 they had left at 8 dollars a box.
I didn't own a 22-250 and still don't, BUT I have a few nephews back home that use them for Coyotes, fox, coons, skunks, some other things too.

For years Walmart had American Eagle $15 for 50 rounds. I thought when I was buying 5 boxes at a time they I would have an endless supply.

Hands down ruger American predator, that line of rifles is about as good as it gets at that price point. Picked one up a couple years ago for the yotes, and because the ammo is cheap(er) and plentiful. Thing is a tack driver.

Pulled out the Ruger 10-22 this morning to shoot a rabid skunk.
(10:30 this morning and he was walking in circles in the front pasture) Hadn't shot it in a while. I am thinking about putting a quality scope on it and seeing what kind of range I can get out of it.

The Ruger American Ranch rifle has the Wilde "spelling"? Chamber so you can shoot the M 16 guy then shoot his 5.56 Nato. All the bulk 5.56 "we" hoarded shoots chew can lids at 200. The Superformance groups quarter's..im glad mine is old style with a flush Ruger magazine. Even 10 rd mag pols are tall off your pack. If any body knows of some SHORT 5rd AR style let me know. I have my ranch rifle with me 98% of the time. I might forget my bill fold and reading glasses but I can kill what needs it...get the Ruger Ranch..they are scarce.

I found a couple of boxes of 22-250 at Bass Pro this week. I have enough to put a hurting on some PD's this weekend. But I am ordering a Ruger Predator in 223, should have it in a couple of weeks.
