Favorite Elk mouth Call

Nothing beats Rocky’s calls. He’s a really good dude too. I know Jason and he’s a great guy as well but his calls just don’t fit the same. Granted that’s different for everyone but Rocky’s got it pretty dialed

I bought some Carlton mouth calls off Camofire and I have a hard time using them consistently. I practice with them occassionally and they just aren't very good I am guessing. Is that normal for cheap calls? How many calls does one own or have to buy until they find the right one(s)? Also, do you have to use a mouth call in order to use a bugle tube? I know....I am new to calling so deal forgive me. :)

I am guessing differnt calls fit ea. person differently. A long time ago I found an elk call (Mouth call) that worked well and I didn't go back and get more right away, ever since then I can't remeber what call it was and have tried several, a few work OK for me but none as good as the earlier one for some reason I guess just keep trying until you find one that fits your mouth and then buy several extra

I have a mouth call for you to use…

I like Phelps tag notcher and rocky mountains raging bull.. there's a bunch of different calls out there you'll just have to try some out and find something your comfortable with

I have heard good things about Phelps. I plan to order their Maverick and one other to try. I have used a month call for turkey hunting since the late 70's and realize all calls don't feel or fit in everyones mouth the same.

*“Calls”

Primos. Normally the red. Whatever call I use has to have that small palate addition to keep the reed from vibrating against the roof of my mouth.

I got my Phelps in yesterday. First time I tried that brand and they are very nice and very easy to use. Out to the three I got the The Maverick was my favorite. I did buy one of there mini but it is to small for me. Sometime a big call bothers me so I ordered a mini thinking I might like it but after looking at at I am going to send It off to someone who has a youth hunter. Thats actually you it is made for. I do have a couple Rock MNT on the way.

I’ve primarily used the Rocky Mountains as of late. I’ve always ran a diaphragm paired with a tube for bugling but switch over to a an open reed for cow calls.
Do you ever use a bugle tube without the need of a diaphragm call? Do the Diaphragm calls give a bugle more believability?

I use a Berry Thunder Bugle call. It has a built in reed that you can change for tone. Its a very easy call to use.

For cow sounds I really like the Primos top pin call. I use the red one for bugles. The primos calls just seem to fit me better, I have used the Rocky mtn calls too but as others have said some calls just don't work with everybody. I could use them but they just don't fit quite right.

Wiz, you can also get the primos bugle tubes with the blue reeds on them, they don't sound as realistic especially with a beginner but they do work, I have the baffle bugle and I have called in several bulls with them. I can actually grunt and chuckle better and more realistic with them then I can with a diaphragm call.

I am one of the judges for the annual RMEF World Championship Elk Calling and I can tell you the best of the best are using the Rocky Mountain and or Phelps.
Personally I use the Phelps Maverick as a locator.
But for killing bulls, a cow call is hands down your best weapon.
That’s pretty cool that you get to judge, and shhh ? let everyone keep thinking you can only bugle them in…

I like this

I don’t know where you guy hunt but where we hunt if you call, the big bulls haul azz sure you can call in medium size and smaller ones but we stopped bugling years ago. That’s why we get the big ones

As for the primos bugle tubes. I personally use the terminator (with the blue reeds) IMO it is the most effective and easiest to imitate all the elk sounds. Killed many bulls off this combo

I like the Rocky mtn contender that is in the the Chappell series. Shield mountain outdoors out of Colorado used to make some amazing cow diaphragms but I don’t think they are still around.

I Like the Rocky Mountain - Brown One ( raging bull I think ) the and the dark blue one for cow calls. The high plastic dome ones do not fit my mouth.

I’ve had decent success with the one this young buck perfected years ago. It’s all about the lung power to reach out on those call shy, non existent General season bulls. With that said I also second Phelps. Good luck this season.

No, the only way to call elk is bugle non stop… everybody knows this… definitely keep bugling non stop like the YouTube fellers ? ( gotta keep spreading that gospel)
