art's deer.jpg
It was opening day of archery 2005. Chilly enough in the morning that I needed a long sleeve jacket. I shot him maybe a half hour after sun up from the top of the ridge above my head. He ran about half way down the hill and tipped over. I walked down the hill and dressed him and then drug him the rest of the way down the hill to some shade and left to get my father and a cart. We got back to him about 10 in the morning, took some pictures and wheeled him out. Probably 80 degrees at the time of the picture. Temperature topped out at 95 that day, but by then the buck was carted out and in the cooler.

I knew temperatures were up there. You look like you could use some water. I hate hot hunts but we take what we can get. I remember my first white tail, I harvested him on a coveted hunt in South Texas on the Laguna Atiscosa, very limited draw. It was December 11, early 1990’s he was a six pointer, little deer, it got over 100 that day! Not only did I get dehydrated but I was full of little bitty ticks from throwing him over my shoulders. Again Congratulations on that nice buck!
